Hey guys,

Personally I have never bought a phone with operator branding. I preffer to buy a phone that does not have it. However I cant help wondering, why people buy it or why others dont. Any thoughts?

Very bad and very annoying, I really dont know why they do it.
I guess people buy them depending on which network they prefer and there are always ways of unbranding them.

In some places it hard to find certain phones sold unbranded, so consumers have no choice but to buy it branded. Also, I find branded ones are slightly cheaper. Also, if you happen to be a huge fan of a certain network (which noone ever is), branded ones usually come with additional logos and wallpapers & stuff.

But i still think its not a good thing. You cant use other networks with the cellphone so thats gonna pose a problem for people who travel to various other countries quite frequently. Also, I dont like looking at a networks logo printed onto my cellphone.

I think when it comes to branded/unbranded/locked/unlocked phones we need to remember (and this is going to be a point that escapes most people here), that customers for the manufacturers for handsets are not in the vast majority of cases the end user, but the networks providing the phone (certainly in the UK). Phones are bought from the manufacturers and passed on at a heavily subsidised rate by the networks, so the manufacturers will work with the networks to ensure their phone is carried, normally working together to develop branded software...

For the customer Sony Ericsson sells the Vodafone/Orange etc branded phones to, they are exactly what the customer wants... The customer being the network. The vast majority of end users will actually take what their network has in stock, or available, so keeping a network on board as a customer is vital to successful business model.

The only way this is likely to change is if more people start buying direct from the manufacturers at full price, but they won't, because they don't want to pay the real costs, so instead they buy a subsidised version then moan about it, without understanding how the business actually works and what they would need to do to change it.

I understand the business process. But, if we were to ignmore the fact that the branded phone is bound to one operator and looked whats inside. I think that the real problem must be that the operator offers an unatractive User Interface and that the handset manufacturar is apperantly better at it. If the operator would have a better looking operating system, then users would think differently.

If I take myseld as an example.I like the Walkman branding and the Sony Ericsson branding, but I am not so fond of the operator. Had the branding been cool enough, I would. Do you agree?
