Hi,

I am trying to use my P990 as a 3G modem that my laptop can use to access the internet. And I want the P990 / laptop connection to be bluetooh.

I have managed to make the bluetooth modem work, by entering *99***5# as the phone number to dial in the connection dialog box that pops up on my PC before connection.

However, the max connection speed is 115kbps (shown in Windows XP) and the P990 connection log shows "GPRS modem". So it looks like I am connected over GPRS but not 3G, even though the P990 on its own can make a 3G connection without any problem.

How can I use the P990 as a 3G modem, and not GPRS modem? Do I need to enter a number different from *99***5#? (By the way, I have tried all the possible number combinations of the form *99***1#, *99***2#, etc....).

Any idea anybody?

Thanks

My provider is Vodafone. I have also tried *99#, but again, it was showing "GPRS modem" in the P990 connection logs.

How were you able to tell that you were connected at 3G speed? Does the P990 connection log show "3G modem"?

I have a German Vodafone branded P990i and use it as 3G modem over Bluetooth.
Also in the manual the log is called "GPRS log" and not "UMTS log", so don't worry about this.
With the original Vodafone setup in my device I could not make a connection on the notebook, not matter what format (*99CID# or *99***CID#, CID is the number of the data account) and number I tried. With the P910i I had no problems, but finally I found out that no matter what data account number I use, as long as the additional AT string is filled in it works (Windows Settings/Modems, right click on the 990 entry and fill in the additional modem string). On German Vodafone you need:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.vodafone.de"
If you have established a 3G connection you can tell the difference by your feeling, GPRS is dead slow compared to UMTS.

Also, you can tell it's on 3G when the 3G icon comes up on the P990, You know, the blue oval thing? You DID see that in the manual, didn't you?

I wouldn't trust the connection speed indicator in Windows; it's probably reporting a serial connection info it gets from the modem script. It used to indicate this 115kbps with an old GPRS T68i and P900, which usually max out at 40-45kbps.

All that said, I sort of feel sorry for the agony people have to go through with setting up a mobile as a GPRS/3G modem. I bought my P990 a few days ago. Minutes later, I was browsing at 3G speed through my PowerBook.

But then again, I'm on Mac OSX.

PeterG,

What service provider settings did you use with the P910? They should work just fine now.

Do you have a 3G SE modem script?

What modem script? 3G? Have you tried all of the CID's?
What are you getting when you connect?

Please try to be as much detailed as you can. Small things help define the bigger issues, or so I've been told ;_]
