Lets get this right... the phone is supposed to have 60MB of internal Ram...

Now that's fair enough, most phone have less than that...
and you can install progs, mp3's etc to the said internal ram...

I doubt that by installing to the internal ram, would give less usable free ram.. so why not configure more of the ram as free for use in the first place ????

The memory wizard gizmo would be great if there was a slider to allocate the ram, because it does diddley squat so far..

an average of 11mb free out of 60mb is pathetic... no way is 49mb used up..

Rant over..

Hi John
I hate to tell you this but you don't store anything in RAM permanently you store it in the phones memory/drive and yes where has all the ram gone is a very good question that unfortunately no one seems to know the answer to or have the solution to. I can recommend SwissManger or even the Pro version depending on your needs and with this app you can manage your ram better and free it up when needed to aid the smooth running of your phone it will get better but how much now one knows yet. Also if you are not running the latest firmware an update should help.

Hi Marc..

I don't have a memory problem so far... but that's not to say it won't happen..

As for the installing, you know what I meant.. internal memory rather than the external MS..

My question was regarding the allocation of that internal 60mb... and whether less could be allocated for installs, so more was available for free use..

einst:

you seem to be confusing storage memory with operating memory. There's 64MB internal storage memory, like a built in memory card. But this is purely for storing installed programs and files etc. Think of it like a disk drive in your pc.

There's another 64(?) MB of operating memory. This is for running the OS and applications. Think of it like the RAM in your pc. The only way to gain more free operating memory is to reduce the memory required to run the OS and essential programs.

Basically you can't trade storage space for more free operating memory, because they're two very seperate things.

Sorry Mysh, but you are wrong about the memory..

according to Sony, it has 60MB of internal memory, plus a 64MB memory stick included.

It does say "actual free memory may vary due to phone pre-configuration"

So all I was saying, is why not configure less for storage, and more for usage.. most people will store on MS anyway.

that 60mb pre config refers to wallpapers, pictures, video and java that sony or a provider may install that will eat up the 60 mb internal memory.

that is not ram...

RAM is where the memory of the programs, application software, and data are stored. THe 60MB is only the phone storage.

So let me get this right then..

Disregarding the MS....

phone has 60MB internal memory for storage of progs, mp3's, try&buy, etc

AND xxMB of ram for running OS and progs.... ??

Sony only mention 60MB on their website, and on the phone it only shows 62mb (16mb used, 48mb free)
