Was looking for a replacement for my laptop. It's such a pain going through the airport with a laptop, so I wanted something small that could do it all.
I Looked at the N93, it's heavier than my Dell server. Had a play with it and the functions werent too bad, just you get arm ache while holding the phone/camcorder/dvd player up to your ear, if you chat for more than 2 mins. It's like carrying a bucket of water on each arm, with both arms stretched out, if you like that kind of thing.
I also don't have any trousers or belts that can take the strain of holding the N93 up.
Next the Sony Ericson P990, I ordered it, I'd used all the previous P models so had faith. It certainly looks good, not a bad size, turn it on...reboot (the phone is rebooting to optimise memory). Well that would optimise it, seeing as there is nothing running in memory now cause you just rebooted.
Open a couple of apps...."phone is rebooting"...smooth.
Apps are ok, screen is okay, but not that many colours (screen) when you think about what some of the other phones have now. This phone is 2 yrs too late.
Wifi - What a nightmare...find a Wifi spot, great, try to connect...can't. Go to Starbucks...connects just fine...open browser...can't find server. Go to another starbucks...connects....open browser....T-mobile page opens up so good, but I have to pay to get online so sod that. Go to Hotel with free Wifi....find Wifi "free Public Access"...connect...can't connect. I will play with calulator for a while instead.
The whole Connection Manager application is too confusing and I dont think it really works. You don't know which parts of the browser need wap, or Gprs or will work over Wifi. Even if i am doing something wrong..I dont care anymore because it just rebooted again. Sending this back to the shop.
Got a Nokia E61 and I'm telling you this is the way to go. There is no camera or coffee making facility in this phone but if you can live with out that....its perfect.
I'm on the internet, using Wifi, it was easy to connect. There are a few little niggles like the browser doesnt seem to have a plugin for flash...as yet. I've downloaded opera so will have a play with that. But I'm connected , surfing, checking emails. Just have to figure out how one makes a phone call from this thing.
Nokia E61 is the one for me. The one really surprising thing was the price of the P990 and the E61. The P990 is way over priced but i guess. It looks good but doesn't do much else. Mabe you are paying for that fancy calculator application and that intelligent rebooting mechanism built into the phone. It can convert from pounds to ounces as well, in that calculator.
