Mates, which is really better the NAND or the NOR chip?? P990i is using the NAND but which?? Can they fixed the hunger for RAM just by firmware upgrade??

NAND memory is cheaper (for the phone manufacturer). The disadvantage of NAND is that the operating system can not be executed in place, like on NOR chips. Instead, when the operating system or any built-in program is started up, it is loaded entirely to RAM and executed there. This feature is one of the reasons for the RAM on the UIQ3 phones is insufficient (the other reason is memory leaks). The P800/P910 phones used NOR chips, while the UIQ3 phones use NAND.

Thanks lisa for your reply. IS there any way that the NAND has an advantage to NOR???

Thanks a million Lisa
To all, my post from the below URL is following suit Lisa's clear explanation on the type of RAM memory UIQ 3 devices used today, as compared to P800/P900/P910i:

Hi spine6, the only advantage that I can think of, is that NAND chip is cheaper than NOR chip

SE is obviously trying to lower down the cost as much as possible

Also noting the BST-33 as opposed to what we are supposed to get out of the box, the BST-34! The lack of ICE case as opposed to all previous generations of P series, etc, etc... BUT... WE ARE STILL PAYING A PREMIUM FOR THE P990i

Thanks adnhk1 for your reply. Can SE fixed the memory problems by just upgrading the firmware or by hardware only??

This alone may change the UIQ3 phones to much more usable devices. The NAND problem requires new hardware, that is more RAM, which is likely to come in the successor phones (also probably including Symbian 9.3).
