I have installed office on my xp machine and when i try and type i get the following error message (at the bottom of the screen):

'This modification is not aloud because the document is locked'.

Now ive searched the help topics and it says about activation... im sure i have already activated it... to check this i have started word up in 'safe' mode and it says it is already activated.... (also i can type and save in safe mode but not in full mode...).

I have tried reinstalling it etc..... any ideas as im totally lost... i thoguht id try here before phoning microsoft and causing a huge phone bill

Thanks all

pc specs are as follows:

office 2003 pro
2 gig ram

Sounds like the laptop has had a version of Office 2k3 on it before. It's a known bug, sometimes if you have a version of 2k3 on there, uninstall it and then reinstall it can totally bugger up the activation process causing the symptoms that you describe.

A reinstall of winders is the only known cure AFAIK If the laptop has never had 2K3 on it before, then I think your phone bill is going to get a hammering! Normally, if a product has been activated too many timers, you get a different error message to the one you're describing.

been waiting for you to get on msn all day lol

I see what your saying matey... thing is we bought this from MESH computers (through the company) and its brand new... it came installed but after about 1-2 months we had probs in all office products... (as described before) so i dod a *cough* re-install of office.... it fixed teh prob that time but now its gone again and reinstalling aint helping

is a windows reinstall all we can do? if it is i will be phoning Mesh and getting them to sort it out

Thanks Cyco

Ps, i love the old flower power T-shirts

I'm afraid so old chap looks like the Mesh rep is going to be in for a hard time

I've had a shufty on the old googlebox for you as well but most of the forum posts and tech help sites that I saw seem to agree with me, a full reinstall is the only reliable way of sorting this.

What you said actually figures, this problem normally occurs when uninstalling or upgrading the basic version of 2K3 in favour of installing the pro version.

It turns out our cds have been installed on teh wrong machines hence teh problems athenticating....

Basically teh microsoft guy got me to take all teh registery keys and stuff out of teh registry and reinstall...

job done!

Thanks cyco for your input a reinstall was not really an option as mesh (teh tuggers) dont give you a disk with your new pc.....

thought id update this as someone else might have a simular prob one day

Are you implying that I could be remotely geeky in some way fatreg? If so, as soon as I've overclocked this laptop and spent a few tens of hours of World of Warcraft I'll be back here to give you a piece of my mind!
