i've noticed that the predictive text on my P990i is a little too...predictive sometimes...

everything, i mean everything that i type, even email addresses in my contact list are being stored in the dictionary and they appear out of nowhere when i type messages which is not ideal when i am trying to type something really fast and all sort of rubbish words appear here and there. Is there any way to delete words off the dictionary? i've tried to do it in the normal way, by composing a message and selecting "My Words" but the list was completely empty!

Any help would be much appreciated as this is driving me crazy!

@mkouk

In FC mode, compose a new note-->more-->text options-->my words. You can add, edit delete in your personal words list here.

You can do this in FO mode as well.

as i explained above, i've already tried that and it didn't work... it seems that there is a "secret" dictionary stored somewhere in the phone memory different from "My Words"

@mkouk why don't you turn off predictive text if it bothers you? Or slow it down a bit when your typing.

i've turned it off as a temporary solution, although i'd like to find a way to erase the dictionary i "created"

I agree with mkouk, the predictive text input is the only thing that really irritates me with the p990. I've gone into my words and deleted the ones that bugged me the most, but anyway, this was never an issue with previous SE models. I would only hope that some option once will come with the possibility to use old-style T9 input. I see that K800 users also has this problem, probably other new phones also, I hope this will not be a concise change of all new SE phones though.

The idea that the phone shall predict the next word one is about to type is kind of a silly idea I think. Who types the same text in many messages after another? My experience is that the system has perhaps been correctly estimated 2 of probably 100.000 words I have entered.

But it seems that not everyone is so eager (as me and topic creator) to get back to the old system, so I wont expect a fix, just have to live with typing slower than I used to.

Maybe turning off "Next Word Prediction" will do the trick ("Write New >> More >> Writing Options >> Nxt word pred.")? That's what I did with my K610i, then the T9 worked "old-fashioned" just like in my old K700i.

Next Word predictions seem to be stored in another place, not in "My Words." This feature predicts words based on previously typed sequences. Like if you typed "Dear Sir" often enough you'll see a grayed-out "sir" everytime you type "dear."

Hope this helps. Btw praises to SE for giving the option to turn this feature off. I once had an O2 Xphone II, the feature couldn't be turned off.

That would be excellent if possible, I can however not find this option in the P990. Hopefully it will be an option like that in a new firmware.. Glad to hear it works like that in your K610 though.

@mkouk, I can fully empathise with your situation. Having words that I entered by mistake into the dictionary or words that I only wanted to use once but ended up in the dictionary irritates me no end. Having used a Nokia previously, there isn't even an option like "My Words" where you can erase them.

Having said that, on my Symbian phone, a Nokia 3230, I did manage to delete the T9 user database (it's the words that the user input, not the original T9 database). Note that I am not sure if it works on the P-series phones and doing so is a risk that you take. I used FExplorer, but I presume you can use any third-party app that allows you to see the system files on your phone. I don't have my 3230 anymore, so I can only try to recall as best as I can, the location of the T9 file. It should be in System\Data\T9UDB0f.DAT, if the P-series uses the same file structure as the S60 Symbian phones.

Delete that file and restart your phone, you'll notice the user defined words should be gone. When you enter a new word, a new version of that file will be created. What I did was to input all the words I felt I would usually use, then backup a copy of that new file with only the words I input. So whenever I felt there were too many unnecessary words in my dictionary, I would repeat the above, only this time I would replace the T9 file with my backup copy. It worked for me, I hope it solves your problem.

Once again, I have to emphasise that I cannot be responsible for any unexpected results and any tampering with the system files is a risk the user has to take. Having said that, it isn't all that dangerous nor difficult to do, so good luck and do let me know if it works.

This is now my biggest gripe with the phone. 9 times out of 10, i'm typing away without taking a peek at the screen so by the time i finish the paragraph and look up, i'd find words that i didnt even type! It's the fact that it predicts the full word from the first few keypresses that irritates me the most.

I've also colcluded that its a very poorly conceived feature: when the first few letters are tapped in, how do you tell the phone NOT to insert the word it suggested and revert to the word you typed WITHOUT having the word already inserted into the sentence?! Hitting the space key will insert the word, hitting the right d-pad key also inserts the word. So, it seems the only way of avaoiding the word it suggests is by either scrolling down the list or deleting the remaining characters once it insters the predicted text.

A very bad design if you ask me.

Regards
