Hello everyone,

I have tested my new W950i for a few days now and i really love it. Best phone i even had i think with the 4G memory and a ds970 bluetooth headset its rocks.

Anyway my problem is that i have lousy 3G reception. I am using Telia card which has the best reception and i live in Malmö so it should be at max reception or atleast 4/5 (indicator). Now i have a max of 3/5 and mostly 1-2/5 which is really bad. I have tested my other 3G card (comviq 3G) with the same result.
If i change to GSM (from the menu in connection i use manual and change network) i get full reception with both cards so the radio should not be defect i suppose.
Or it could be that GSM and UMTS (3G) are using different radio? anyone who knows for sure?
How about you guys, i mean do you have the same experience or anyone with a w950i have better reception then me?

Wondering if i should send the phone back but not sure yet if it is a defect or not. Anyone who have suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

Please notice that GSM and 3G are totally different networks.
Even if they carry the same name (Telia in your case) the GSM and 3G network operate in different radio frequency.
It is normal to have a better GSM signal than the 3G one. This is how it should be.

Sosojerk:
I understand that but my older W900 had almost full reception from the same spot so that is what makes me wonder.

fu1at:
If you are referring to the “3G only” in the network selection I am already using that.

Hi, the same happens to M600i and P990i as well. These 3 devices are using the same gsm/3G chipset and hence all are facing the same issues. With 3G turned ON, GSM is greatly affected in areas where 3G signal are weak. This resulted in people facing gsm getting disconnected every now and then and has been reported a few times both in esato as well as other forums like my-symbian.

The same SIM card swap over to say, a W900i, at the very same location, does NOT face this issue at all... I am still hopeful that this issue can be fix via firmware upgrade. Else it does make the current crop of all UIQ 3 devices as bad as Windows Mobile when comes to GSM recpetion

Hi rico666
I am having exactly the same problem with my M600i although some one has tried to tell me all 3G signals do this as the cycle through the bandwith or some such other rubbish. As you have proved with your W900 this is not the case and my N93 has no such problems so no idea what is causing it but sure hope they are able to fix it and soon.

Thanks allot adnhk1 and Dogmann. you put my mind to ease.
I was so worried that i have gotten a bad sample (i am usually very unlucky in these matters hehe).

I hope they can fix this with a firmware release. After all the hardware is pretty much the same as w900 (inside info hehe).

O well i love the phone anyhow. looks damn cool and the Bluetooth actually work
Just wish the CPU was a bit faster. Programs starting a bit slow at times.

I have exactly the same with my P990. Only with 3G turned off, I can use the P990i as a phone (signal/call quality wise).
The W900 of a collegue works perfect in the same spots, where my p990 has problems (same provider SIM cards).
This can not be a network issue!

I have updated my P990 to latest firmware (R9EC001 Phone). It is still the same shit. With 3G on, most of the time calls don't come through, I get "line busy tone" when making a call and so on...
Only solution at the moment: switch to "GSM only mode", then everything is fine.
I also found, that the reception in "GSM & 3G mode" is as bad as in "3G ONLY mode", as long as there is "some 3G in the air" - it seems to make no use of GSM if 3G becomes weak?
Again - NO PROBLEMS with a W900 in the same spots. This situation renders the P990 useless as a 3G phone.

Yupp same here. On top of that i now have crashed atleast 4-5 times a week.
One day i had 3 crashed where the phone hanged when i had incomming call or when i was calling out.

If it was not for the fact i use it for music player (A2DP) i would return it.

I think i will try the Nokia n95 once its out. This will be my last SE Symbian phone.
