Right hi there guys this is my first thread. I have been reading this forum for a few months now and was wondering if you guys could help me out or give me some advice, as u lot are the ones who know these sorts of scenarios the best.

Basically i baught a P990i off of ebay for £380 and it was sim free, but there was a catch the schmuck didnt tell me it was vodaphone branded! The p990 accepts any sim as i am with tmobile flext35. I want to upgrade my firmware as it is the standard dogs balls that comes with the voda branded p990 and it also has that annoying vodafone start up screen. Now considering i baught it from an auction (no till receipt, it was an unwanted upgrade) and that i use it for my tmobile contract i dont think going to a vodafone store would be a wise idea. or am i wrong? what would be the best way to get my firmware updated and SE branded? I live in london so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

P.S Just a lil note for the jelous ones in this forum. the p990 is the dogs bolox, there is not one smartphone that can even blow a kiss at this monster. Buy one and you will understand what the p990 religion is about.

Hi SE-P990i

Congratulations on your new phone and glad you are happy with it but according to whats been said on this forum Vodafone are not going to make updates available via SEUS so your only option to get newer firmware will indeed be via a Voda phone store and they will need to send it away for a minimum of 4 days.

Now for the bad news you are stuck with the Voda screens and you are not going to be able to change it to generic SE software at least not now if ever.

Believe it or not not everyone is jealous of your P990i and as for there not being any smartphone that comes close that is merely your opinion I'm afraid as IMO my Nokia N93 kills your P990i dead on every feature except for a touchscreen but if your happy with it that's all that counts as each to his own.

Hmmm.... This is a good one. From reading the threads, you are currently stumped!

You can not use SEUS to upgrade because it is a Vodafone branded unit. You can not use third party software to unbrand because (I understand) none exist.

As you are not bound by warranties I believe that you can go to a Sony Ericsson Service Center and get them to upgrade it. This may work for you.

If you are going down the latter route, BACKUP THE PHONE, just in case!

Good luck and let us know what you decide and the outcome.

Hi SE-P990i
Nope afraid as i said you are stuck with the little Voda branding you have for now and as others have said you have to hope Voda don't add more branding on the next update. Also not sure if an SE service centre will have the upgrade firmware you may to be forced to use a Voda store and send it away but let the forum know if your successful but would suggest phoning a service centre first to save a wasted trip.

@Dogmann,

Yea, your right about Nokia N93, its a hot one, i probably would have settled for something that if i wasnt so shure that a touchscreen is the single most important thing when web browsing ETC, touchscreens are THE difference between serious phone/PDA's & just a high spec phone.

Also rather amusingly, i notice its the first thing i get asked when i chat with the ladiies, "ooh ooh, is it a touchscreen" they always ask, yes, i say reasuringly, of course it is. LOL

I'm sure an official SE service partner can change the software for you, for a fee. You should give them a ring.. Do not attempt any tricks yourself, or your warranty will be void.

you can update your p990 voda version via seus,....cant you?

The update would come out first for generic se models, then the networks release their updates a little while after....

thats how it was with my k750 voda version, i had to wait sometimes a couple days or couple weeks to update....Vodafone has to give permission to se for their phones to be updated....

so i assume the p990i will be able to be updated on seus....

Hi all
Firstly i am joining Johnex on his quest, can people please stop quoting previous posts the whole time unless absolutely necessary and especially when there are only a few posts previous to theirs it really is ******* annoying and unnecessary.(Rant over)

Now enzym & ads1107 please people read the forum before contridicating what has been said as whilst this may be what you think. Many others have reported their experience that does not back up your claims. It would be different if you have actually achieved what you are talking about and are relaying facts and your actual experience. What has been possible in the past is just that the past and is no longer possible so all your statements do is cause confusion which defeats the purpose of the thread.

Pachy and SE-P990 actually when the ladies see my Nokia N93 they actually say "Wow thats a big one" LOL.

As i have previously stated i thought the thing i thought i was going to miss the most was a touchscreen, but the advantage of a non touchscreen is that the screen is much more visible in nearly all conditions whereas a touchscreen needs the correct lighting conditions or becomes virtually invisible. This is not just MO and if you go to All About Symbian there was a test run with various devices that reached the same conclusion.

Also the web browser in my N93 is not only IMO better than either Opera or Opera Mini but with the D pad you actually move and place a cursor and click it which is both fast and easy IMO. I also currently have a M600i so this is my real life experience not sour grapes or me being a Nokia fan boy SE hater either. I can actually enter text as fast if not faster on my N93 than with a touchscreen and lets be honest UIQ3 is soooo slow S60 3rd Edition is much faster and gives so many extra options for customizing menus and shortcuts. But we all choose our devices for personal reasons and whats right for some is not for others.
