A lot of people these days have WiFi and people will sometimes leave them unprotected or have very little security on them. I'm a novice when it comes tot the WLAN setting on the P990i so could anybody talk me thorugh what I would need to do to try and use somebodies Wifi? I know it's not right but it would only be using a small amount of their bandwidth for a short time to check emails etc

Very honest, give you credit for that
All you do, is search in various places under your wifi options and see if you can pick up a connection that has no security/password next to it.
To be honest, my brother has been using free internet via wifi for 6 months on his laptop

even no obvious security when scanning does not mean you will gain access as smoe people simply apply mac address protection to their wifi network

Hi all,
Don't want to be a prophet of doom but just a word of caution, some people who attach no security to a WiFi network do so for less than honourable reasons. This may not be so risky on a mobile but depends on what you may have on it. Laptops again it depends what you may have on it but you could well end up with all kind of malware etc. etc. Now i am not saying this is definitely going to happen but it is possible so as they used to say in Hill Street Blues
"Be careful out there people"

Using wifi that you really don't know can harm your gadgets. It can give you viruses, adware and spyware. Just connecting to a wifi give you an instant headache

On a simalar topic
I'm no wi fi expert either but understand its purpose
I'm using wifi at home no problem.. using a laptop, for the first time i took the lap top out to Canada recently thinking i'd get a connection in hotels, hot spots etc.. I found getting the connection no problem on unsecured networks, but the problem was on several occassions (8 out of 10) although i had the connected status good signal etc i was unable to view any web pages or retrieve email. I'm still in the dark and unsure why as on the few occassions it worked ok. Any ideas?
I'l have a p990 soon and wondered i'd have the same problem?

That is true. Many laptops have the Wi-Fi shared. That means that you can connect to that laptop, and then through that conection, you can get out. But guess what, that laptop does not have to be connected to the internet, but still you get a "connected" status. There are 2 types of connections, one to infractructure, such as routers, and to other laptops, such as peer-ro-peer. Look for the infrastructure ones first.
On your device, and for that matter, on any enabled wirless device, you can see the connection status up untill the node you are connecting to. After that, you cannot tell if you got out or not, but you could ping any sites, or just try to open a web site.
On the P990, you see a lock next to the networs that are secured, and nothing next to the ones that are un-secured.

Thanks for your input, though i'm not sure what to do.
From the laptop when i want to connect i go into wireless networks and see what is available, depending on the location a list of networks appear of both secured and unsecured which are clearly marked as you say secured networks appear with a pad lock. So i select one of the unsecured networks with good signal strength, how is one to know whether its 'infrastructure' or something else?
So is it trial and error?
Is this a problem with most Laptops, if so, going into a wifi zone seems uncertain of getting where you want to be? Surely this cannot be!?

there are different icons on the left hand side of the screen where you can sleect a network. the routers show up as stand up match sticks, with signals on top. the computer to computer show as 2 conputers connected over the air (duh...).
sometimes, like in hotels, even though the infra structures are unsecured and you can connect freely, once you open the internet it will ask you to either pay or enter some security code.
with the "free" or unsecured wi-fi it's a trial and error thingy. try to connect and see if you can get out. that's all. if you can't, you are just out of luck.

thanks for the feedback. I've connected before with my P990i in a hotel but then you had to pay. Is there a standard password etc for routers that lazy people may stick with? you know like pin codes on phones such as 1234
