Today I went into the Vodafone shop where I got my apparently unlocked P990 (of course it was a locked Vodafone version but since it was free, I felt slightly guilty about complaining too much!) to ask about getting the firmware upgraded. I was told that instead of sending the phone away, for £20, they could give me the unlocking code for the phone. I'm not too sure what this actually means, but can anyone tell me if this would then free up the phone for SEUS updates online? The guys at the shop couldn't be sure.

Currenlty the only way to unlock the P990 is requesting the unlock code from your network provider.

No one on line is able to remove the lock code.

Changing the software on the phone will also not remove the unlock code.

Hope this helps

All Vodafone P990's as a far as I'm aware areunlocked, but NOT unbranded (startup and shuting down screens have a Vodafone logo on them)

Sorry, but what "Guy H" and "darrengf" say seem to be conflicting. I use phones alot but have little knowledge of their technicalities. The only thing I care about is being able to update my phone using SEUS and hopefully experience the improvements as and when SE release them (I know there is a good phone under all the software cockups!). The fact that there are Vodafone startup screens or references to Vodafone in the menus is fine by me, especially since they've given me the phone for free (they deserve at least that!!).

So I go back to my original question: If I paid the Vodafone shop £20 for the unlocking code, will I then be able to update the phone via SEUS?

Hi gseh88
You will be able to put any Sim card in the phone and use it that is all the unlocking will do for you. You will be able to use SEUS if and when Vodafone release updates for it. Currently they want you to send your phone to their service centres for firmware upgrades this will take a minimum of 4 days. They are not makeing them available on SEUS at the moment apparently hope this has cleared things up for you.

Thanks Marc, but as far as I know, the Vodafone P990 will already accept a Sim card from another network. It is not locked in that sense. That's why I was curious why they actually offer the unlocking service. I thought that perhaps this meant that it was unlocked for updating via SEUS. Maybe I'm just clutching at straws.

Interestingly, whilst in the Vodafone shop yesterday, I noticed that current P990s have Vodafone branding on the flip where previously it just said "P990i". Maybe new phones are more locked than the old ones which is why they offer the unlocking service??

Unlocking and f/w flashing/debranding affect different areas of the phone's memory, they are independant operations - that is, doing either one will not affect the other.
For f/w ops, SEUS reads from the handset, amongst other things, the CDA. This tells SEUS the region/network that that particular handset was intended for - in the case of UK, Voda P990's, the CDA should be: 162008/91.
Now Voda DO NOT support the use of SEUS from what I have read recently, even if you try to force an update through SEUS, it will see the Voda CDA, and NOT give you generic(unbranded) firmware, as it knows only to allow generic f/w to generic handsets, for which the CDA is actually 162007/1(/2/3, depending which world region the handset was built for). If Voda actually develop another branded firmware, this would be applied by SEUS - IF Voda decide to Allow home use! Otherwise, you'll have to send it to them.....
But regardless, SEUS or other flashing WILL not unlock a handset, and unlocking a handset will NOT affect anything other than what network SIM the handset will accept for legal use.
Hope this helps........

the guy is talking about what the unlock code will do and wether he will be able to unbrand it through seus after the unlock code is used. he is not asking about why he cant update f/w through seus as all of us voda p990 owners are aware of wots wrong.
