Hi there, I need some sort of advice or confidence, perhaps even some help from people with experience within the Armed Forces. I'm a little worried about the path I seem to be taking in life, to the Royal Navy 'Fleet Air Arm'.

The following is simply what will happen...

Basic training
You begin your career at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Devon, where you will spend between 6 and 12 months.

Professional training
You will then spend 4 years in professional flying training.

I'm really not sure I can do this, being away from home and normal life for so long etc. Being a pilot in the future is everything to me, but my confidence about all this sucks right now and I'm getting quite nervous about possibly following this path, yet I can't see myself doing anything else for a future career.

Help me someone? What should I do?

you sound very much like me! After boarding school in UK I wanted to join RAF but wasnt sure it was for me, mostly for the discipline side

Fortunately they used to (maybe still do) give a 2 day course which was then called test-in-advance where you went to Biggin Hill and did some aptitude and medical tests and lived the life to get an idea.

from that I knew I could never do this but fortunately the career I chose in IT has paid for me to become a private pilot with all sort of different aircraft and skills such as night flying, instrument rating, aerobatics, muylti engine etc etc so its worked out in the end, though I never became a commercial pilot

I wonder if the Navy offer such an initial experience to help you make up your mind?

Thanks for the reply Masseur, I was going for the RAF but unfortunately they won't accept me as a pilot with even mild hayfever. Fortunately the Fleet Air Arm are slightly less strict.

If you cant stay away from home for a few years (in the uk mainly) how are you going to handle being away on ship on tour for anything upto a year at atime thousands of miles from home?

When I was small I really wanted to become a PILOT . . . and what I just got in High School was to be included (exclusively) in a PILOT-class group (advanced teaching of some sort) . . .

@xugaa - As a PILOT, you can also be included in commercial flights rather than drving those hi-tech ones (though really a man's dream . . .)

If you will become part of the Royal Navy . . . be prepared in the future that you will be stationed in war-torn countries . . .

Good Luck!

Yeah I know what it's about and all, I suppose it's just deciding whether I'm choosing the right path and all etc. Being away from home is not a problem, just a massive change (for that long anyway) that will be hard for me to perhaps adjust to, it's not just family, but my beloved computer and Yeovil Town FC as well lol.

I was thinking of joining the RAF as well to be a pilot. Not sure my eyesight would've gotten me through, might have been able to be a transport pilot rather than a fast jet one, but i'm not sure id've coped with been away for so long, so changed my mind.

I'd still love to be a pilot though, might try for my private pilot's licence when i get the money as i love flying, even just as a passenger in an airliner!

Did aerobatics with an RAF pilot in a little Chipmunk aircraft whilst I was an air cadet, loved it! Makes all the rides at Alton Towers look tame, especially regarding G forces!

. . . Let us just NOT forget . . . that sometimes when we DREAM . . . the unavoidable happens . . . that's where the WORD - nightmare, sets in (unavoidable obstacles that comes along the way . . .).

@xugaa - Better WEIGH the Pros and Cons of the things that might transpire along the way . . . if you have a girl, then you might just GAMBLE your relationships with that of riding a Stealth Bomber (just like in the movie - Pearl Harbor . . . ya know who really WAS the father of his girl's baby . . .).
