Ericsson will be providing the digital network to Norfolk Island's 1800 residents, the Island is about eight kilometres long and five kilometres wide which makes it the Worlds Smallest Mobile Network.

ESATO NEWS

Ericsson recently built the world's largest 3G wireless network for Telstra, but will now build an older 2G network on the island, which is about eight kilometres long and five kilometres wide.

Ericsson director of marketing and business development Tony Malligeorgos acknowledged "a contrast" between the networks, but said the Norfolk Island network would still be challenging to build."In this instance, one of the challenges, of course, is how we get product to Norfolk Island," he said.

The network, which will include four base stations, will enable Norfolk Island Telecom to provide residents with voice calls, SMS and voicemail."They'll all be happy when they've got it, and certainly those travelling there will appreciate the roaming capability as well," Mr Malligeorgos said.

Norfolk Island Telecom manager Kim Davies said the network would have capacity to supply more than double the island's population.

Norfolk Telecom manager Kim Davies comments:

"We've been run off our feet, we've had 300 connections in the first two days"

Mr Davies is expecting 1000 users within the first 6 months and islanders hope that the new network will boost revenue and help the tourist industry. Some residents were worried the mobile masts would tower over the famous Norfolk pines but because the island is so small it only required 4 very small fishing rod sized masts to provide full coverage.
