Has anyone tried to use the software update from the SE support website?
I can download all the files ok but when the PC says it's updating the phone it seems to take forever - after 2 hours I restarted the machine and began from scratch.
Is it normal to take so long?

It shouldn't take that long time. Maybe 15 to 30 minutes. Did it work after you restarted the computer?

Ran it for 2 hours and quit.
Now the phone won't even turn on, it pips (vibrates briefly) and stays black.
Any ideas?

Yup, totally dead.
replaced it with a new one.
Reckon I may wait a while before trying to install the "Can't go wrong" Software Update...

@jsyboy75
on you PC delete the latest files from:
Program Files>Sony Ericsson>Update Service>db>137????>blob_fs
it is possible that the FW files are corrupt and deleting them will force SEUS to download all the files again
