I haven't tried myself, but would expect it to clear out the phone...I would'nt expect to need new firmware though, it should leave everything it needs to run in place...

So, just to clear it out. It does NOT erase the entire disk? Sorry if i sound like a noob, but this is new to me. Just want to know before i do something rong. So, format the internal disk does not erase the OS? No need to update the f/w? But, that exactly does a format of the internal disk do?

a format on a phone would not be able to erase the OS. IT WILL erase any media (video/music etc.) you have on your phone, aswell as added java / symbian programs you have installed on the phone.
If there is a menu-item to format the disk then it won't erase the OS for definate. I would imagine that the sector of the memory which the OS is written in is probably read-only unless it's recieved some sort of key from an update manager etc.
please check with a member who owns a p990i if you are still unsure about anything. also if you are using a 3rd party application on your computer, I would be warey about this. THIS MAY FORMAT THE
WHOLE PHONE INCLUDING OS.

On the m600i the "format internal disk" removes all non-essential files that is not a part of the OS (like unified inbox, songs that are pre-installed, alongside with images etc.) It does not impair the function of the OS in any way. (I know: I have tried

)

@ge0rge, the problem is there is no way to get the unbranded firmware onto the handset if the memory was erased or not...
