Yep. This is what I am seeing lately. So while in standby, I get from no bars to 2 bars. Sometimes, I get Emergency Calls Only. I have to switch between flight and phone mode just to get back on the network.
But, then if I pick up the phone and make a phone call, the number of bars goes up to 4 of even 5 with a very good reception.
The moment I end the call, the number of drops back to 1 immediately. Very strange.
I need to mention that this happens around one particular area, around where I work.
I noticed this in the past 3 weeks. I remember I did a flash around that time, but how could that affect the reception!?
Is this a network issue? Is this a phone issue? Would a re-flash made it work?!
I switched back to my old P900 and I do get a steady 1 bar, and the number of bars does not increase when I make a phone call...

thx for the hint. kind of gave a clue, and went and switched from a 3G to a 2G card.
in US, Cingular is using the 850 and 1900 band for their 2G and now 1900 for their 3G, I think. Since the P900i supports 900, 1800 and 1900 only, and 2100 for UMTS, I am guessing, just guessing, not facts, that there is strrugle between the 2g and 3G on the same band?! I have only selected the 2G in the mobile networks setup, but yet.
Now with the 2G the reception is a bit better, but not that better. At least it does not switches to emergency calls anymore, now just says not network available.
I am gonna say it's the network. Oh, no, not the phone
i'll live...thanks

It will be the network as both your phones get a poor signal. I bet your inside aswell when u have a poor signal.

Yep. Fortunately I work in IT, hence all this happens indoors. I would hate to work outdoors in Chicago during winter times...brrrr....
And one other thing, I plugged the 2G SIM in the P900 (which does not support the 850) and I have no bars at all. And Cigular claims they have the fewest dropped called among all networks. No I know why: nobody can dial out...

@scroitoru
Good Evening,
I visit the USA quite often fro the UK and i have to admit that the networks work slighlty different to the UK or Europe.
As you know USA uses mainly the 1900 band, however this may sound daft the 1900mhz band is harder to go through walls and this is why the signal is unstable. Yes its funny but very true.
The reason when you make a cal the signal improves is the phone works harder in not alowing the call to drop. So the signal is boosted from the phone and the mobile phone mast by as much as 25%
People on here mention SE uses a different type of signal system to Nokias, again this is very tru SE use Real time signals so you know how good or bad the signal really is.
When i have been in the USA i do get the privilage of using all the GSM networks but Im still amazed on how many times the phone will switch from one network to another its like playing table tennis.
i have been visiting USA in the last 10 years and can say that the GSM networks have vastly improved. I have recenlty read that the US networks are the fastest in the world for growth and the fastest networks that have been implemented and improved on.
The 850mhz is only in vastly populated areas and isnt overly pushed now.
the 3G networks are the next big thing in the USA and these are what is now being worked on and will be pushed soon.
Here in UK we have pretty good networks and do take things for granted now. However on my last visit to Florida i was very impressed with T-Mobile and Cingular. I didnt encounter 1 problem with the networks at all

That is good info.
BUT, I worked on the same indoors spot for the last 2 and 1/2 years using a P900 untill 2 months ago and I used to have no issues. Something sles is going on. And others, with Cingular supported phones have no issues at all.
It's gotta be the combo Cingular and P990 and this place and last 3 weeks. wow, what are the odds ..
