oooo-errrr, sounds nasty!
What happens when you start the PC in safe mode? Keep pressing the F8 key immediately as you switch on the PC and select 'safe mode' from the menu that eventually appears.

hmmm...
i just tried, and the pop-up camp up and told me what safe mode is for and asked if i wanted to start in safe mode. i clicked yes, now it just has letters across the top...
edit: but i can still bring up the task manager...

well i guess i got lucky.
i rebooted in safe mode with command prompt.
it did what it did before, exept the command prompt came up, so i changed the directory and tried to start C:/ and all, nothing worked, (just wanted to see if i could) and i closed the command prompt, and for some reason, the system restore was open behing the command prompt, and i restored it to a week ago, and im back up and runnin!

Nice one
I haven't got a bloody clue how you did it but I'm glad it's working again
Considering that you've done a system restore, it suggests to me that it was almost certainly a software problem (obviously, DOH!

). I'd do a checkdisk and a full virus / spyware scan to hopefully prevent it happening again.
