In the last few years its become confusing to buy a laptop because of all the new types of processors and their 5 different names and their 5 different speeds with their 5 different Front Side Bus speeds etc etc.

Anyway, which one?

http://www.johnlewis.com/Shop[....]=0&SkuList=230404043|230404048

BTW, the website is wrong. £650 one has a Core2 Duo T5200 with 533Mhz Front side Bus.

Anyone know how much difference a 667mhz FSB would make compared to a 533mhz?

Will these last say 5 years or is 64bit computing gonna outdate it all? Vista should be fine.

The £800 one is the best. Bigger screen, a meatier processor and a decent graphics card.

Hardley any during normal use. You might notice a reduction in the time it takes to do memory and processor intensive tasks like video encoding, but when surfing, checking email, playing games etc. you won't see much difference at all.

This is highly debatable, but I always stick to my guns on this subject! I've seen very high-end machines slowed to a crawl by viruses and spyware and I've seen low end machines go like the clappers after a fresh install

As for will it last 5 years? Yes, because Toshibas are usually pretty sturdy laptops but it will be well out of date by then. Anything you buy now will be pretty much pre-historic in five years time in computer terms.

Cheers for the reply,

If theres not much difference between 533MHz FSB and 667MHz, is the processor much meatier on the £800 one?

The spec on that website is wrong for the £650 laptop. The processor is actually T5200 a low end Core2 Duo running at 1.60Mhz with 533Mhz FSB as the low end component. Whereas the £800 one runs at 1.66Mhz with 667Mhz FSB. So it only differs by 0.6Mhz.

As for lasting 5 years, I guess I wont be able to run 64 bit programs but everything else Im going to assume I should be fine.

Id prefer to get the £650 one if theres not much difference on the processor and the slow FSB wont affect most tasks.

Yeah, processor wise there's not really a lot of difference. It's the graphics card that makes the main difference in the more expensive model.

So if you're never going to play demanding games on it or use it for 3D modeling, CAD etc. then the cheaper one should be fine for you

Is the spec on the £650 one Windows Vista Premium ready? It just says Vista ready on the toshiba website.

I dont think i'll be doing any 3D modelling or CAD. I hope the cheap one can play Pro Evolution Soccer 6 and 7 (next year), neither should be graphic intensive and recommended spec are currently about pentium 4 with 1.4 Ghz right now.

Is it worth spending a £150 more for this

25% faster fsb
4 cm Bigger screen
Nice Copper Orange cover (I like it anyway )
Good Graphics card
1000 ethernet
Not too ugly unlike the cheaper one

and still losing this

smaller and lighter
20 gigs more
1h30 better battery life

Forget the front side bus, it's the last thing you need to worry about! If you want to play the latest football games on it you WILL need a good graphics card. The graphics card takes the strain away from the main processor and memory, you see. On-board graphics share the main system memory and generally have pretty weedy processors meaning that your CPU has to make up the difference.

If you don't want to put up with playing the game on the lowest detail settings and suffering jerky gameplay whenever there's a lot of activity going on, you need a laptop with decent graphics capability. On-board graphics and the latest games don't mix, even if they don't have stunning visuals.

ok I see, I doubt Id be playing any games tbh, I just like to think I might have the time.

Do you think the £650 laptop will deal with Vista premium with Aero well? Or do I definately need the graphics card for Vista Premium and apps?

It should run Aero OK, but you might lose performance elsewhere because it's sharing resources rather than using purely it's own as a dedicated graphics card would. Basically, the one with the graphics card will run Vista better but exactly how much better is difficult to say!

If you're not a big gamer then you'll probably be fine with the £650 one
