buy a Sony Ericsson
just kidding, my M600 using a t-mobile sim sometimes keeps the icon there long after I have listened to the voicemail and I've just assumed its a network thing since I assume they send something that activates that icon and thus also send something to clear it, but for some reason the clearing sometimes take a while.
in summary, I assume its a network issue though I suppose its possible that the N73 has a firmware fault that fails to pick up the signal that clears the icon

One solution my wife has found on her Nokia 7370 (on Orange) is to leave another message. Once you have listened to that message, delete it (press 3), then wait a few seconds has the voicemail indicator disappears, then hang up. Hope that works.

Ok for those that are interested here is what orange had to say - it is a known issue with the N73 and the Orange network and will be fixed in the next firmware update - for which there is currently no release date.
A workaround solution to the problem is to take out your sim card and put it in another phone but dont turn it on yet. Then ring your mobile and leave a new answerphone message. Then turn on the alternative phone you now have your sim card in. Listen to the the message and delete it in the the normal way and wait for the answerphone message on this phone to dissapear - now hang up. Put the sim back into your N73 and 'hey presto' no voicemail icon!
