Ok so I used the internet at 35000ft fine we all knew that would work, but I forgot to turn of my phone and had it in my bag and upon arriving in London I saw a text message from T-mobile saying standard roaming charges for calls made in Zone 5 are £1.40/min.At first I thought silly I am back in my home network so why the hell is it saying this. So I ignored that message but continued to check my messages and WOAHHHHH

The next text blew me away...

Welcome to Russian network MegaFon! Enjoy your stay here to get the information please call 0500.

And let me assure this was a direct flight Tokyo-London non stop altitude never dropped so unless this MegaFon place has a damn good signal I am quite impressed.

Nice to hear that.
Actually going up is better as far as radio waves are concerned which means to less interference (assuming everything is clear).
So theoretically you can go upto 25~40km which is the limit of gsm towers range .

I sough the Flight 93 movie the other day. It was based on the actual events on the plain during the 9-11 attacks. Some of the guys on that flight called home using a cell phone, so I guess it isn’t impossible to make calls on a plain.

Yeah I thought of that, but that plane was not at that height as it had already descended so hence why they managed to get a signal. But 35K is high so next time they say please turn off mobiles phones as they may interfere with communication I think we best take the advise...haha.

you can get signal in a plane, the only problem is that you're travelling so fast you are unable to maintain a signal for extended periods as you would change masts so frequently or go into regions with no signal
