It's F8 you press, then select safe mode only from the prompts it then gives you, good luck and hope you can get it up and running again

Generally if you want to connect 2 devices in 1 IDE cable one of the devices must be in "Master" mode and the other must be in "Slave" mode. To change this you must check on the back of your unit (HDD, CD-ROM, etc) the jumper configuration and select the option you need.

If you only have 2 HDD and 1 CD-ROM you must end with something like this:

|--------HDD (Master)-------------CD-ROM (Slave)--
|
|--------HDD (Master)----------------------------------
|

or

|-------HDD (Master)--------------HDD (slave)-------
|
|-------CD-ROM (Master)--------------------------------
|

To check if all drives are working you should go to the BIOS (press DEL as soon as you turn on your PC) and look for the drives configuration option.

Then all you have to do is install windows on your new hard drive, mount it and recover your files.
