This is truly amazing: a game rendering BILLIONS of full-scale planets, a game world bigger than you can explore in your entire lifetime!

source

Have you ever wanted to explore a game that has no borders ? No invisible walls, no voices telling you to turn back, no mountains you can't get over and no seas you can't cross ? If you have then you're happy to learn that a small independent team is working on a game like no other. A game so huge you simply can not see all of it in your lifetime. A game with a galaxy with up to hundreds of billions of worlds. A game called "Infinity: The Quest for Earth."

Some of you might say "Impossible!". But it's very much possible. The active development of this project was started back in 2004 with the creation of the engine and the planetary terrain algorithms by programmer Flavien Brebion. And while the game has come a long way since, it's still in early development with the first playable version expected nearing the end of next year.

Looking at the screenshots and videos though, it will be worth the wait. If only for the simple fact that you have unprecedented freedom to explore suns, planets, moons, asteroids, nebulas, black holes etc, all with realistic scales. This is something no other game has done before. But there will be much more to Infinity than just sightseeing.

It's a MMO (massively multiplayer online game) where you can socialize, trade and fight with other players. You can hire characters to control your ships and follow your orders. And as you get more powerful and rich, you can own anything from space stations to entire planets and a fleet of ships. I for one would like to be there when two super-powers like that decide to duke it out amongst the stars

Check out this 4 minute demo video of a seamless landing and take off from the ground surface of a planet in orbit to a gas giant with a ring. Among other things, the video demonstrates the use of atmosphere scattering, per-pixel procedural terrain texturing, the clouds layer and the planetary terrain level-of-detail.

Minimum system requirements

These minimum requirements are only estimated and will probably change to something more accurate as the development progresses.

CPU speed: Intel Pentium IV 2 Ghz or AMD Athlon 1500+ or equivalent
RAM size: 512 MB
Video card: a graphics card supporting pixel shader 2.0 (ATI Radeon 9500+, NVidia Geforce FX+)
Disk space: at least 2 GB
Internet connection: 56k modem
Operating system: Windows 2000 or later

Recommended system requirements

These recommended requirements are only estimated and will probably change to something
more accurate as the development progresses.

CPU speed: Intel Pentium IV 3+ Ghz or AMD Athlon 64 3500+ or equivalent - optimized for Dual core systems -
RAM size: 1 or 2 GB
Video card: a powerful video card supporting pixel shader 2.0 or 3.0 (ATI Radeon X800 XT+, NVidia Geforce 6800 GT+)
Disk space: more than 5 GB - used for caching textures -
Internet connection: ADSL
Operating system: Windows XP SP2 or later
