> My W800i developed a problem!

I seemed to have having some problems with my W800i regarding my keypad. Ive already tried taking out the battery, simcard, memory card and leaving the phone for over 10 mins but its still has the same problem
I have contacted the Sony Ericsson Helpline and they told me i need to send it for repair as it sounds like a hardware problem. As its still under warranty (they said its has 24 months worth of warranty as it was purchased after a certain date (i think jan 2005). I have decided to send it off to them and here the letter that i wrote to them:

Subject: Sony W800i problems
Dear Sony Ericsson,
I purchased my W800i on 17th January 2006 from Orange on Contact (which you find a copy the delivery note enclosed with this letter). The IMEI Number of this handset is: **************-*-**. An authorised Sony Repair Centre in Tottenham Hale, London, updated my Software from R1N035 to R1AA008 in Feb 06 due to it developing a minor problem with the software. Since then I have not experienced any major problems until now, where it recently developed possibly a hardware problem. I would like you to check and repair my handset for these following faults:
1. Keypad: The keypads suddenly develop a strange fault. I noticed the problem when I was texting as when I typed a word it typed a different letter, number or spaces instead and the funtion of the keys changed i.e clear seem to delete. Also the text I typed was being deleted on its own accord. I switched the phone off and left the battery, memory card and Simcard out of the phone for over 10 minutes. When I reinserted them and switched on the handset and proceeded to type in my pin number, I noticed that more * then my usual 4 pin number as was appearing. As a result, I now have blocked my phone and cannot put in the PUK Code to unblock my handset due to the problem still persisting. Could you please check the nature of the fault on the keypad?
2. Simcard holder: When my Simcard was removed and reinserted, the phone didn’t seem to detect my Simcard and was displaying the message: “Insert Sim”. It took a few tries before my Simcard was detected. My Simcard works ok in my T610. Could you check if there is a problem with the Simcard holder?
I would also like you to review these other issues I have with my handset:
3. Joystick: The orange rubber top fell off when its was around 10 months old or so old. I have tempory fixed it by playing some glue in the middle to able to give me grip due to the joystick being uncomftable and awkward to use. Could it possible to for you to replace the joystick as the handset is still under warranty?
4. Handset Fascia: Due to the “portrait mirror” silver being worn, it is possible to replace the mirror or the whole back cover as the handset is still under warranty?
I would appreciate if you let me know you have received my handset safely and the current situation of my handset and the repairs that you will carry out on it by contacting me either by mobile or email.

I am really gutted that i will be without my beloved W800i and they quoted around 7-10 working days for repair. In the mean while its looks like i have to use my T610 for now :-|

@ Residentevil: Yeah, i hope so too, I've backup most of my stuff to my memory card and have all my numbers stored on my simcard.
Does anyone know why or what have caused this to happen?

The only possiblity I can think of might be any kind of moisture damage - has it been exposed to moisture at all - even if something simple like being used in the rain, in the bathroom whilst having a bath/shower, etc.?
The problem is if they detect any moisture damage they won't repair the phone under warranty, it's not usually covered
Hopefully it'll be something simple like the keypad connector coming loose or a problem with the keypad PCB though!

I was in the hairdressers last week & was on the phone while i was getting my hair washed & noticed that the screen was wet after i finished. So it's possible that water may have gone on the keypad :-l
I've left it on a face towel on the radiator & will see if it stil the same tomorrow.
The thing is that i texted ok this morning with it then this problem suddenly happened. :-|

Water/moisture damage though can take a while before it shows, it often takes a week or so after the 'first contact' for symptoms to show, and maybe another week or so the phone could even die completely. It takes a little while for components that have gotten wet to corrode a bit, so it may be a bit late sadly putting the phone on a towel, if you suspect at all that water's gotten into a phone, take the battery out immediately and leave the phone somewhere warm and dry for a couple of days to dry out. It could be the keypad PCB or worse, it's connector on the phone mainboard has become corroded
I'm hoping I'm not sounding like I'm being overly pessimistic here, it could well be something fairly simple and unrelated like the keypad pcb simply becoming slightly dislodged after a bump or something!

Hummm ... i had the phone switched all the time since the hairdressers, so if your right and the water has got into the phone then it's not good news
As a percaution, i put taken the silicon phone cover, memory card, battery cover and battery off and left it somewhere warm place (my radiator) to see if it was due to it getting wet in the first place. I've checked those moister stickers on the back of the simcard holder and top of the battery to check if turned red from water damage, but they are still white.
They keypad is still working but it just seem to be "messed up" at the moment, typing other things or doing different functions :|
I have Orange care as well and i phoned them up explaining that i had a problem with my keypad. They said they need to do a diagnostic test on it to determine wheather the handset needs replacing. They have W800i in stock at the moment. I told them i'm gonna send it off to SE for repair first and see what they came back with. If its not good news then i will use my insurance to claim and get the handset replaced but that will also cost me £15 access free and i will have a next day delivery. I guess it better then buying a new phone.
I'm not one happy bunny at the moment and so missing my W800i :'( but also dreading the news i will get back if i do send it to repair ... *SIGH*

Update: I checked my W800i this morning and it seems to be better now. The keypad isn't doing the things i listed before and responding to its functions when pressed. All the keys seems to be working except the "C" key which seems to not respond that well and is slow/sluggish to delete text. It does looks like water may have got into the keypad afterall
I've put it back on the radiator and wrapped it in the towel and leave it a bit longer to warm/dry out.
Do you think i should still send it off to Sony Ericsson for repair?

Could be worth trying Orange care instead, they seem to be very good, my wife dropped her W550i and broke the screen, Orange had a replacement (sim free unbranded!) handset with her the next day.
The only thing as I say is that they may not cover you if it's water damage, but it could be worth a try if the phone is not in a realistically useable state.
See how you get on and if the keypad continues to behave itself
