I am sure that this must have been asked before but a quick look didn't reveal what I was looking for.
I am going Xmas holidays where I'll have no access to dialup. I need to access the internet and as I do university research I need the fastest speed I can get. What I have is this:
Laptop
K800
Vodafone monthly contract
Orange Pay as you go internet account
K800 USB cable
Bluetooth
I tried to set the laptop to connect to the internet by dialling the orange number and it works. There are two modem drivers on the laptop:
Sony Ericsson Device 039 USB WMC Data Modem (COM4)
Sony Ericsson Device 039 USB WMC Modem (COM5)
I used the Data Modem one. The speed I got is 9.6Kbps
Also I must mention that the phone is on the 'GSM only' setting as I don’t use the 3G much.
When I tried to repeat the above with the phone on 'GSM and 3G' and the 3G icon appeared on at the top, the modem/mobile timed out.
Then I turned my attention to 'USB Internet' setting. I put that as on and selected 'Contract WAP' for the data account (which is what my 'Internet Settings' is on the phone). When I connected the phone to the PC the globe icon appeared on the phone as it was connected t the internet. I tried going to a webpage on the PC but it was having none of it. It was definitely connected to something because my 'Local Area Connection 3' (which was setup by the Sony Ericsson setup) was connected.
So bottom line what is my best option and what speeds should I be happy with?
PS. (I know about datacards BUT this is, almost, a one off so I don’t want a 1 year contract for a data card, and second my laptop does not have PCMCIA).
Thank you
