Hi,
My friend has a k750i with a dead lcd. He is willing to sell it to me for very cheap. I'm wondering is it likely that the phone only needs a new lcd? If I buy one from ebay and pop it in, it should work? The phone turns on and off fine. If the phone turns on than it must mean the motherboard itself is working fine and it is just the display?

That is a very educated guess.

That is what we learned in school. But you never know, that is why I'm asking.

It'll be a bit of a gamble, it could just need a new LCD, or it could be the mainboard's connector, which for your average joe would be nigh on impossible to fix, would need some impossibly fine soldering!
Also try calling that phone with a sim in, make sure it's not blocked or has any signal faults to rule that one out.
I've bought many phones that 'just' needed their screens fixing, sometimes they're fine and I have a bargain, sometimes they turn out to have faulty screen connectors, are blocked, water damaged, or have software problems.
My advice is to go for it if the price is cheap enough, if your friend is asking too much then forget it

If the phone works with SIM in it, as Sammy_Boy mentioned, then take the phone. You can change the LCD in a very short time as soon as you'll get new LCD which can be bought from any online store. It is not much expensive so with a little "impossible" tehcnique of opening your phone

you can make it work AS NEW.
