Guys,
I bought a P990i off ebay. It is a sim free generic sony ericcson phone and its called the P990i and not P990c or something else but it seems like this is a chinese phone
It has a lunar calender and chinese dictionary too
The virtual keyboard is in chinese characters and although I have changed all text preferences to english I still get chinese characters come up here and there!
Can this phone be updated to a UK version though the SEUS or a service centre and will I need to pay if the latter - Thanks

Your model seems to be the Singapore version. My mate has one of these.
Its almost the same except for the two extra's you have mentioned??
You can get it flashed to UK at a

sevice centre.

Its the same hardware but not the ROM. And its very lagging, i mean the software. Since you already bought it, suggest you find a friendly SE center to get it totally reflash to English only.

I have that phone too, Hong Kong version
DLed English language pack to work around the chinese text input problem. But it won't install.
Updated using SEUS "US English." Didn't solve the problem as well.
The only thing I am doing now to aviod chinese test input is to turn flip open keybroad input to Enlgish only and turn off flip close keypag input. Now typing is all in English, but alot of times the default keybroad is set to have ALTed (ie typing symbols instead of ABC...). Keypad input is completely off, so only 123 on flip closed.
It sucks that I can't type SMS with flip closed and can't type to contact name (ie type "J" for John) on flip closed.
If you find a way to solve this problem, let me KNOW
