> What's coming after p990i?
Bookmark topic
First of all, I have been using p990i for the last 3 weeks. Its simply amazing. I own p800, p910i and now this one. There is no comparison in features.
I am wondering, what can SE add in the next version of P series ? what I would love to see is:
Hardware
- >4 MP camera with hardware zoom
- built in GPS
- support for > 8G card
On the software side:
- performance improvement (gosh, uiq3 is really slow and buggy)
- customizable key mapping. it can improve the usability so much.
- SE, please open the OCR APIs.
-
I wouldn't change anything in the look or form factor of p990i. Its fantastic. Keyboard, WIFI and screens are a treat.
what do you guys think is coming?
Does anyone have a clue or inside details on whats cooking in SE's kitchen?

The camera is fine. 2meg is the size of of the highest res most people use on their PCs. In fact, my 19in screen is set to 1280x1024, which is 1.3meg. You'd have to go to 1600x1280 to experience 2 meg on a PC. So, unless you're going to print out on A4, and most don't, then the current size is more than adequate for most of us. Camera envy is beginning to creep into mobile phones, but it's nothing more than numbers for most people.
I agree witht he speed issue. This phone is so slow it almost seems not to be working at times. But is this a problem with the softweare, or the processor? I think it might be a hardware issue.
For a new phone, I'd like SE to put reliability before features. I like to know that it won't let me down.

Had my P990I for 3 day's. Amazed by it and no crashes yet but I haven't really pushed it yet.
As for what's next. What else but the IPhone!!
After that I think SE will launch more stylish Symbian devices, some with and some without touchscreens. VGA screens, HSPDA being more standard, a least 8GB memory, WiFi G.
Lets not forget that fancy looking touchscreen windows mobile phone that started as a concept but you can now buy for £30,000, is it the ONYX?
I would imagine one day we'll end up with phones like bluetooth headsets and we communicate with our personnel computer assistants.

you both didn't read my message properly.

I think the P series has seen it's day. I think SE's next attempt will continue the Symbian / touchscreen theme but I can see a move away from phone/pda to more pda/phone type devices, ie. something like the TyTn or XDA, perhaps something with a slide keyboard. With the new range of WM smartphones and the N95 I think SE needs to rethink it's approach.
The P990 is a great phone but look at the amount of software available for windows smartphones and nokia's OS. Absolutely shed loads of apps and games, especially nokia. The P990 has a handful of apps and a few freeware proggies - and companies have had extra time through the delayed release of the unit to produce something worthwhile - with poor results.
I know the P990 is aimed at a different market, but this market is rapidly declining into a die hard few (me included) who follow the P series market rigidly, wanting every phone and longingly waiting it's release.
The trouble is producing a phone like the P990 is going to start costing more to design and make than the money back through sales.
Now SE have UIQ under their control more I really hope they rehash the OS and allow more user control. WM5 has more configuration options for most things than UIQ does - and i find the touch screen interface for copy/pasting on WM5 much easier than UIQ. :-S
I'm not too worried about whether the next SE product has support for 8gb plus or faster processor. Sure more is better - but what I want now is a fully featured product for business and leisure, with more customisations, themes, developer support, applications, music and more. ie. Functional software is more important to me than increased hardware.
And let these new SE devices have unique names rather than series such as Pxxx. Just imagine a sleek black PDA phone: the Sony Ericsson Panther.

@Enigma-UK
I think you will find SE just bought UIQ not Symbian there is quite a difference.
