however i open the camera display the normal camera screen opens and then quickly shuts without prior warning, returning to the menu screen.
only started this evening but i really need it to work again!!
if anybody can help me id really REALLY appreciate it!!

tried that a couple of times but it doesn't seem to have made any difference, although it did crash/freeze the first time i tried to open the camera screen again...

yeh thanks for that but sadly it didn't work - i have a feeling its something to do with the software on the phone... or something like that! does anybody know if theres any way of me resetting the phone completely or updating the software on it? (i'm not really that great with electrical equipment...)

This sounds like something that happened with some K750's shortly after the model was released, and it happened to the first one I got, which I had to return. It has nothing to do with software and a master reset won't help.
It's the connector of the camera module to the main board that sometimes get loose. If you have a T9 screwdriver you can (carefully) open your phone and re-attach it. There are several picture tutorials on how to do that. (This one:
http://forums.se-nse.net/index.php?showtopic=1195 shows how to open a K750, I know, is not a K800, but it might give a general idea)
If you don't feel like opening your phone, then take it to a service centre.
