I read that GPS is supposed to be in all new cell phones now... so when can we as consumers expect to see usable GPS in Sony Ericsson phones? Namely the P series? I read online that all new cell phones are supposed to be able to be located for 911 reasons... so they will have GPS in them... i suppose not all of these phones will be usable as personal GPS units... but surely the P series will be.
Any way, I was just wondering if there is any word, or buzz, from Sony about when to expect to see P series phones with built in GPS.

You say GPS is in all new phones now, but I can't find a single phone on the market with GPS, Where are you getting this information?

Hi shrubba and all,
Most phones do not have GPS fitted yet, as if the did they would make it very well known. The way they can approximate where a phone is using the 3G networks is by the signal to the cell towers and gives a rough idea of where the phone is. It is no where as accurate as the GPS position fixing either. Hope that has cleared up the situation for you.

GPS = Global Positioning System
Transmitter triangulation is not GPS.

The opening post said that ALL mobile phones have GPS and he said they had it NOW. Most, if not all the phones you listed are not available NOW.

HP's hw6515 (HTC Beetles) and hw6915 (HTC Sable) have GPS. I considered the hw6915 before deciding on the P990i, mainly due to the
P.O.S. camera in the hw6915.
FYI! A friend of a friend told me that this is why the firmware update has been delayed until January.

is struggling to make GPS work as a software-only solution!

I'm getting a bluetooth GPS mudule for my P990 for Christmas. Best way to do it as GPS recievers vary a lot and the tech changes a lot. It's also one less thing to go wrong on the phone AND a GPS module built in the phone will eat it's battery life won't it?
