Can some1 shed some light to how the preferred list of networks can be either deleted, re prioritized, and updated?
I am on Cingular, US. What I see on the preferred list of networks is what I think it came with the phone, cos I see networks I never heard of...such as Viaero, or Centennial, or Corr...And guess what, these are on the very top of the list.
When I click on any of these, I get the option to change the priority and to delete. But none works. The network stays on the same place/priority or it does not get deleted.
I am not sure if this affects the phone in any way, regarding reception. performance and such, but I would like to be able to maintain my own list.

Hi, Sorin:

That list sounds like the built-in Internet group of connection accounts, presumably for your sim-card-operator, Cingular. They control how the P990 connects to the internet for web browsing, email and mms (multimedia messaging service or picture messaging) and have no effect on phone and text messaging operation.

Here's a brief outline of how they work. For details, you can consult the user guide. If all the fine print in that little(?) book is daunting, you can browse SE's nicely-structured searchable p990i web guide. I use it all the time, instead of the user guide, but then I have always-on broadband.

You can certainly make your own accounts and groups, although the P990 won't let you delete the built-in Internet group, and Cingular has apparently restricted what you can do with their built-in accounts. In fact, you must make your own account if you want to connect to the internet through your secured home or office wireless computer network. It's probably not a good idea, but if you really wanted to, you could set the P990 to use only your own settings and ignore the built-in group and accounts, so you don't really need to consider deleting them. In any case, you probably need the accounts to connect to the internet through Cingular.

Starting with Internet accounts menu > New account, you can make either a group or a single account for a given type of internet connection:data: for another brand of sim-card (assuming Cingular hasn't sim-locked the handset),
data: for another other country (your sim allows roaming),
dial-up internet,
computer bluetooth network,

or
wlan: computer wireless local-area network.
The operator or service provider will provide the details for you to enter. Popular services can be automatically set up by text message from Phone setup in sonyericsson.com/support. Your sim-card-operator's website or technical support may offer a similar facility. The phone has a built-in accounts for wi-fi hotspots and bluetooth connections. In your own groups, you can add, re-order and remove accounts.

You can adjust the groups so the phone tries your fastest or cheapest account first, you can have different behaviour for web browsing and for sending and receiving with different email accounts, and you can switch your preferred group group as you move (between home, train and work, for example).

thank for the time and the great tips.
unfortunately, i am looking for the preferred network list, not for the internet settings. Those I have under control. So dar. Wi-FI, GPRS, MMS and all work fine.
I am looking how to add/delete networks, under the phone conection options.

I think this is down to the SIM rather than phone. I tried editing on my P910i, but it always changed back.

Sorry about that detour.

I tend to agree with dave1000. A "foreign" network rejects your sim anyway. Scroitoru, can you select any of those non-Cingular networks? Funny, but my Preferred List tab is dimmed and not operational, perhaps because I only have 1 available network: the other 3 scanned networks are "foreign" and unavailable. If I try to select any of the foreign networks, I get a rather curt message as in the screenshot, so priority seems irrelevant.

Perhaps it would be useful if you had a multi-network sim or a dual sim card. Do you guys have any of those?

Count your blessings: At least you seem to have several networks for the phone to choose from.

The list of Networks is stored on the SIM Card.

You can add and change the priority of network you want your mobile to search while registering to a roaming network.

I was able to add and store network/priority on my old SIM card but on new SIM I have to repeat the excersie after every reboot.

I guess it comes with the SIM, as previous mentioned here. I had a 2G SIM, and was able to access the list of preferred networks. Now, since I swithced to a 3G SIM, the tab is not even accessible.

@koolezt
that happens to me a lot. I see 2 Cingular networks, one says Home, and one says GSM. If I try to connect to the one that says just GSM, I get the message you get. But both say Cingular, so I do not know why would not allow to register?! If I do another search right after the unsuccessful registration, only the Home network shows up in the list now. Strange.

Seasons Greetings all!
Best guess: Depends on whether sim is roaming-enabled. I have a vague recollection of my operator's documentation saying to phone them if you want to go abroad and roam. Maybe I'll do that and see what happens. I'm in the UK. Do you know if roaming is enabled in your SIM?

yep. i have the service available. but at $ 4 a pop (min) wouldn't want to use it .
This is what I have:
Int'l Roaming
Intl Roam Toll
STANDARDINTLROAM

but since I got a new 3G SIM, have no access at all to the preferred network list. so it definitely comes with the SIM.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I own a P1i, and so does my friend...

My friend is having a problem accessing the "Preferred List" tab under Mobile networks. This thread seems to discuss the same issue more or less. He would like to change the order of preferred networks, but as I said the tab is disabled/grayed out... I don't have this problem on my P1i...

We checked the network settings on both my phone and his, and they're all the same (although we are in different countries). Is this a limitation implemented by the SIM card? Is there a way to enable this tab?
