Google has held talks with Orange about a multi-billion-dollar partnership to create a 'Google phone'

ESATO NEWS

The Observer is reporting that Google might be working with HTC and mobile/telecom giant Orange to build a Google Mobile Phone, which could possibly have Google software inside the device, and would be able to do many of the web tasks smartly. The device, article speculates, could go on sale in 2008.

Their plans centre on a branded Google phone, which would probably also carry Orange’s logo. The device would not be revolutionary: manufactured by HTC, a Taiwanese firm specialising in smart phones and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), it might have a screen similar to a video iPod. But it would have built-in Google software which would dramatically improve on the slow and cumbersome experience of surfing the web from a mobile handset.

Among the potential benefits are location-based searches: aware of your handset's geographical position, Google could offer a tailored list of local cinemas, restaurants and other amenities, and maps and images from Google Earth.

Google's expansion is scary...just yesterday I read that they're considering going into the personal health information market.

I wonder what the service would be like on Orange. Lower call rates if you click on ads? Or 100 personalised ads a week?

Google are keeping things really interesting, with the level of personalisation they're ultimately aiming at one would never have to interact with irrelevant information. You get what you want when you want it with a whole lot of ads thrown in.

Interesting, but why again a hardware-software combo? I'd prefer them to offer service on all phones. Google is doing a good job on wp - though the Opera solution is even better. Gmail java application is great, though the wap version is maybe as fast...
