> P990i - Worst or Excellent?
Bookmark topic
Hello my dear SE-brothers,
On friday I will set history with my purchase of an P990i, either it will be the most horrible phone I ever bought or it will be one of all the fantastic phones I had.
When I read threads on forums about the phone I everytime meets all critical users, who most of all just complain over the phone; "It's the baddest phone I owned in my life" "batterytime is embarrassing" "It restarts, crashes, the phone get stucked" and thing like this.
I have owned the p900 and the p910i and some other symbian and WM5 mobiles and i've always been satisfied with the result. This time, is the first time when Im really sceptical... and that shocks me.
So guys, it's million of threas about the phone on the internet, review-sites are either in love with the phone or a bit sceptical to it. What shall I think this time?
Sony Ericsson has realeased fireware updates to the unit, when came the last update?
It really scares me when pepole reports that they got same or a lot problems after the update to..? What shall I really think about the phone I waited for and really looked forward to.
Please give me some of your own words about the phone and answer my thougts!
Best regards
Simon

Its a hard question to answer! I was one of the first to get the phone and although i love it, the bugs are sometimes too much to handle. I got myself a treo 750v which is fantastic, however i am always drawn back to this phone (writing this on my phone via wifi). Hardware wise there is not much like the p990. However SE reallu need to release the new firmware, people are getting impatient of the wait. on an other note, the build quality is not great my WHOLE phone is creeking, from the keypad to the bat cover.

I think if you are a regular forum reader you should have enough information to make your decision. Look at my-symbian too. The P990i is a great piece of hardware but the software bugs are there, and there's a lot of arguements. I think it comes down to this. If you believe and have faith SE will fix the problems, buy it. Nobody knows if SE will do that and if so when.

simply, it would hav been an excellent experience if not bcoz of its bad firmware, i hav mine on initial release and it didnt help me at all, though after some firmware updates it's getting the right way, but still the problem exists

I would say there are two types of problems. First one is very confusing. Self restarts, constant crashes, kern errors, tons of bugs, bad built quality, horrible UIQ3, you can read about all these and think (as many do) that P990 is a piece of garbage. 90 percent discussion and disagreement between forum members is about this type of problems. That used to confuse me too but fortunately I did buy my phone and am more than happy with my purchase because I don't have mentioned problems as many others don't. From that side in my case this phone is amazing device. So who is right? It will remain mistery for me.
The other type of problem is the real one and there are no confusion or disagreement at all. That is RAM and memory leak problem. One have to use swiss manager or task manager, care about phone usage, and manually restart it every second or third day in order to regain phone's multitasking capacity (if needed off course). And even then in some cases it is not enough, here I mean of people who need black barry as it is a real memory eater as I could see. Again in my case I willingly do that extra work and in return got all I needed from the phone (don't use bbc) and I am so happy. .So it always individual choice.
Finally the new fw is around the corner and hopefully that extra work needed will be at least reduced if not solved.

Great phone in my viiew, i dont even haave to resstart it to get good performance as i have always used a dual sim swopper, this involves restarting the phone very often to check for messages anyway, so i dont even know if my phone needs restarts for other reasons.
Only ONE thing i think could have been better & thats battery life is good, but not as good as older P series, but then again i use satnav & Wifi quite alot, but the phone looses more battery than you would expect during long periods of idleness even with BT & Wifi off, during the night for example.
NOTE, battery is knowhere NEAR as bad as HP Ipaq PDA's ive had.
Overall P990 is superb !

Hi. After lots of reading about the pros and cons of the P990, reluctantly i went ahead and finally bought it... Having also previously used the p910, i knew what to expect of symbian phones... Anyway, i fell in love with the p990 instantly... It's an amazing phone... Sure it has ram problems but nothing that cannot be managed quite effectively with the task manager or swiss manager.. Loading all the right applications, it has become quite a powerhouse phone for me.. The screen is fantastic, camera quality is great, video recording is pretty decent too.. I haven't had too many crashes or restarts myself.. I give a thumbs up for the phone. If you aren't the constantly cribbing type, then you cen go ahead and buy it. And with future firmware upgrades, it can only get better..

Season's Greeting, welcome to the club, and could you give a follow-up after a week or so? I, for one, am quite keen on a considered new opinion. If you manage to post the follow-up, please mention your firmware versions.
