Just had a thought,why don't manufacturers make phones with proper optical zoom lenses like the one below?..Since camerphones now are just as good any basic digi cam,adding a Telephoto lens as an optional attachment for serious photographers is the way forward is it not?

Did say, an option for serious photographers? Do you own or have you ever owned a serious camera?

In short, no, this is not and would not ever be considered as an option for a serious photographer. Reasons being:

1. No serious photographer shoots in automatic mode.
2. No shutter or aperture control.
3. Limited white balance control.

Shall I go on? This would probably appeal to someone that can not take the step to getting serious equipment. Also, camera phones are meant to be more "spur of the moment" photography devices than something serious.

Actually i do own a couple of serious camera's,my point was that Telephoto lenses should be added as option to phones for people who are bit more serious about capturing images on there phones and want to take long range images ect.

I have seen optical zoom lenses on phones before. None with lenses that big. It's on a Sharp. The lenses move within the phone itself, so nothing sticks out.

god i'd love one of those "add-ons" on my k800 ... it would make it the perfect camera-phone

It doesn't work because of the diameter of the lens, then the focal length of the zoom. Not to mention the amount of distortion that you would get once you tried to zoom. The sheer physics alone are a discouragement to this idea. It is nothing for anyone remotely serious. It is for someone that has a few extra bucks in their pocket that have to have the latest and greatest for their phone.

This is my opinion but I think it is a waste of money and time.

Sharp's had optical zoom for quite a while now, and Nokia does as well.

Well the aren't as good as many cameras IMO. It's physically impossible (at the moment at least) for camera phones to have quality photos. The lens is the first hurdle, and then there's the sensor etc. to worry about.

And also, by putting optical zoom in such a small area, the picture quality goes down as well. The N93 is a good example.

@shaliron,

Thank you for explaining this even further. If Axxxr has ggod camera's as he said, he would immediately know that this is not a feasible offering. As you stated, the sensor is the main issue. In a camera phone, the sensor is simply too small. It is a matter of physics. This lens, if it were possible to attach would still not yield hi-quality photos. Just zoomed-in blurs.

But still, the thought of a tele-lens is nice. Especialy for those of us, who like the outdoorlifestyle.. I would kill for a propper zoom option, so i couldleave my binoculars, and Nikon on dry land, when fishing in open coast - Saltwater and expensive, bulky, heawy an sensitive gear is to be kept apart way apart ! A good distance photo option, is high on my wishlist !
