using the English character set 160 is the GSM standard for single text message size. If you use other character sets you will get less characters.
when writing the text message the character count and number of messages is shown near the top of the screen

A fault with P990 i experience is that if you accidently go over 160 charactors, when asked if you want to send as 2 messages, if you decline, the entire sms you have written is lost, it SHOULD at least save to drafts, bit annoying.

Agreed. Also if we miss-press the back key, the entire sms is gone forever.
In a non-symbian SE phone, if the back key is pressed when typing sms, the phone will ask if the sms to be save as a draft or no.
I hope next firmware will fix this issue.

Yeah i found that problem last night as well. And for some reason when i wrote over 160 characters it said i had use 3 SMS's instead of 2. Its probably something to do with my crappy orange firmware, i want it debranded so much.
