I just transfered 9 background gif's totalling 20.880 bytes, however the size drop on my T68i was from 345K to 285K, that's 60K, three times as much!!!

Yes.......that's the way T68i handle the memory.........the phone taken far more memory than the pics' actual size........can't help it.........just have to live with it !!!!!

Thats weird cause when I upload a background from my computer (6k) the most it will show is 8k or SOMTIMES 10k depending. Also I have seen so many backgrounds on the net that I have downloaded that are like 40k!!! Don't you guys optimize your pictures for the t68i??
Image looks the same but the optimized one is way smaller. I just use Photoshop and "save file for web". Click the bottom right hand corner option. It works great!

Better yet, I use the T68i optimised 256 color palette. The picture at the top (MacOS9) is actually made with that setting. There is minimal dithering so the size should be as small as possible.
