I had been awaiting P990i for long but when it is available, I found it very disappointed at its features. It seems SE P990i is far behind SE new models and other competitors on the market. Its price is now close to W950i but still very poor sales. Currently, SE is just upgrading parts of SE P990i and selling it in different models. Has anyone heart any replacement model for SE P990i in near future? Sony is a very good of producing high quality product and it will be a piece of great news if they can produce the products using MS Windows Mobile OS.

Thanks,

Scott

welcome to Esato

your opinion echoes that of many Esato members already but, although even Palm produced a windows mobile device it seems very unlikely that SE will take that route, unfortunately, given its commitment to the symbian platform

Seeing as SE just bought UIQ that aint gonna happen. Also, despite the general mess Nokia is making with Series60 3rd edition, and SE fluffing the P990i, by limiting the jog-dial and general bugginess and confusion, it's much better than Windows Mobile at doing phone things.

I was impressed by T-mobile's MDA Compact III until I saw the browser mangle every website. Also it doesn't have 3G or Wi-Fi like the P990i has. Or even proper keys! Yeah, it has a trackball and iPod-like scroll wheel, plus isn't as ugly as everything else HTC has made...

I am *still* waiting for SE to make a proper replacement for my S700i...

Thanks for all responded.

Sony has rich experience in losing their route decision as you know, i.e., betamax, Palm, etc. Next month, Nokia is going to launch N95 that seems the best on the market. Which Sony model is getting closer? If you want to buy a powerful pda phone, Nokia - no need to think twice. I am the fans of Sony and Nokia but not exclusive to anyone. As a user, I like more options on the market rather than only one.

One supplier just slows down the development of the product and raises up the unit price. What is the point to have multi-system: Palm, Windows Mobile, Sybian? Unfortunately, it is a process of development, ie., the latest one is Bly-ray and HD DVD. What is the benefit to the users? I started to use Sharp pda long time ago when Palm had not been developed, moved to Palm, then Windows Mobile and might move to Sybian if no other suppliers launch the pda phones with compatible quality with Nokia and Sony. I agree with that the current Windows Mobile design and built quality are below that of Nokia and Sony. However, they brought the new technologies earlier than Nokia and Sony. 3.5G, QWERTY keyboard, Wi-fi G, BT 2.0, Direct Push Mail (Windows Mobile's BlackBerry), GPS, etc., were launched in their 2006's models.

The users of pda phone are falling in love of using their own choice of application programs. The key to attract them is the availability of wide range of application programs. Why are you here? Palm was the winner but now lost to Windows Mobile. How can Sybian be the winner at the end of the day? Do you want them to happen earlier or later? If Sybian is better than Window Mobile, how can you turn its position to Window Mobile who had a successful battle of taking up the position of Palm? I believe we all are users and need to build the route for the best benefit to us.

Sony should not launch P990i in my option. It makes all their fans disappointed. They should immediately launch the replacement phone to get back their fans. Buying pda phones might become less and less as the latest normal phone is so good to most of user groups.

Nokia is going to launch N95 shortly. I hope it is due to the fact that Sony will have a top phone launch soon.

Windows Mobile? Yuck. I own SE P990i, P910, P800 and QTEK 9100 Windows Mobile.

I don't like the GUI of Windows Mobile. I find it awkward, backwards and annoying.

As for Nokia they haven't produced any nice looking phones for years. I'd rather buy an LG or a Samsung. But I guess everything is possible...

At least you're not considering a Blackberry. I don't get those at all.

Just my two cents.

=)

Sony Ericsson aren't Sony, Sony is a parent company that only has a small input compared to the Ericsson side of things.

The P990 sucessor will more than likely be Symbian with UIQ and probably with a form factor similar to the M600.

My P990 is out (in my mobile phone box), it did not live up to expectations at all - slow, buggy, etc

Now using a Samsung SGH-i320 with Windows mobile, excellent, so much better, logic menues, much easier to use AND it works well as a phone besides being very slim!

well, phone is still there, will do upgrade and try, read the thread but couldnt really understand if the RAM issue is solved or not, this is my biggest problem, will keep it on my twin-card for now and use it when travelling (TomTom works great) - but still the Samsung is so dam slim compared to P990, will try out TomTom on the Samsung eventually

@de_construct
What mess do you think Nokia has made of S60 3rd edition? it has tons of apps and is really fast and stable no memory leaks either the only fault is that Symbian 9.1 is more RAM hungry than previous versions and therefore multitasking requires a bit more attention to detail and what you are doing but nothing as drastic on the P990. If some don't like the design of Nokia's fair enough but plenty of us find them attractive enough and the build quality on their top end devices is excellent no creaking battery covers or cheap plastics that lose there colour either.
