I've browsed here and there on this website searching for the best navigation system for my P990i, but what I read didn't convince me.
So I'd like to ask you guys who already have some experience with mobile GPS : which one do you think is the best ?

By best do not only understand the quality but also the price/quality.
I'm ready to put the money if it's worth every penny.

1) WisePilot :
- Does the subscription expire after 12 months ?
- How's the image, sound quality ?
- What's included in the pack ?
...

2) Nav4all :
- The software is completely free, but cheap usually sounds rubbish.. how's the quality ?
- Can its gps receiver be used with other system ? Like TomTom or Wayfinder... ?
...

3) TomTom :
- Does it already exist for the P990i ?
- That's one of the most popular navigation system but is really better than the others ?
...

4) Wayfinder :
- The one which attracts me the most cause its subscription is unlimited in time, and the pack comprises car chargers and phone holder.
- Not cheap at all but what about the quality, accuracy of the info ?
...

... ... ...

Haven't listed them all 'cause I don't know them all but I think you understand what I mean.

What about how easy the manipulation of these navigation systems ? And the phone battery ?
Some need an extra memory stick... how convenient is that ?

Thanks for your advice.

By the way, I've never owned a navigation system.

Yea, you can buy Tomtom 6 for P990i

I use it on p990, its very very good, have tried many other sat nav systems on p990, wayfinder, Orange's own, nav4all, navman ETC none are up to tom tom, many use constant internet connecting which is not what i want, tomtom doess th job really well & without the neeed for constant connections to web, as route & maps are already on your phones memorycard, best use a 1gb or 2gb memorycard you will see Tomtom (set up with uk & europe maps & selection of voices) using about 500mb.

heres a package that was on ebay recently, i'm sure you could copy off th sd card & onto a MS pro duo,

Pachy thanks for your reply.

How come the P990i is not on the list of the compatible devices, even on TomTom website ?
What have done to use it on the phone ? Have you copied all the content on a MS Pro Duo memory card ? And do you use the receiver supplied in the pack ?

Also, you talk about internet connections... Does it use a lot of MB 'cause I don't want to have a huge bill ?

Tomtom includes the UIQ installation on its install DVD allowing you to install the required maps etc on to your memory card. The GPRS useage applies if you subscribe to Traffic and Speed cameras. The maps are installed locally on the memory card. It is still as you mention not on their compatibilty list and as such Tomtom will still not currently support the product on a UIQ3 device.
The other products (Nav4all) etc. are data dependent as the maps are downloaded as required.
Another option which is the route I took is Navicore 2007. The UIQ3 devices are on their supported phone list and I can only speak for the UK version, also has free speed camera updates and free traffic.

mayacesar,
The P990 is not on the supported devices list because TomTom, and many others, are 'famous' for publishing incomplete device overviews.
To name all compatible devices is to much work and just reffering to the supported OSses is to abstract for many potential customers.

To answer your other questions:
- purchase the TomTom Navigator 6 DVD (with or without receiver) and install the UIQ3.0 version on a 1-2 GB memorystick
- I'm sure pachy copied all data to the Memstick since this is the only way to get TomTom to work properly
- You can use the TomTom receiver or any other brand as long as it support the BT serial profile and the NMEA GPS protocol (almost all available BT GPS receivers comply)
- Amount of data used is limited to Kb's not Mb's

Lambert & DocTorpor thanks a lot for all the clarification.
I'll go for TomTom 6 as advised.

It's always a pleasure to come to this forum.

Cheers,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a GPS unit to use with TomTom? I'd also like to use it for geotagging photos, although I've no idea if there is a UIQ3 client for that kind of thing yet.

@mlittle:
I am using the genuine TomTom Wireless (BT) GPS Receiver and it works like a charm with the UIQ3 version of the TT6 software, albeit on my W950i not on a P990... Might be the safe way to go,but I'm sure that there are (cheaper) BT dongles out there that might work just as well..

Easy one, Tom Tom. Works a treat and the sat nav part is a one off payment, you subscribe for new maps or traffic camera's etc. I use it and think it's the mutts nuts
