> 40% volume, 80% proof

hi peeps,
i have got some vodka which is 40% volume but 80% proof, what does this mean, is it twice as strong as normal UK volume? (it is imported)

essentially it uses a ratio of 7:4 which is approximately half, so 80% proof would mean it is about 40% alcohol (45.714)

If it was 80% alcohol or something, it would probably give you alcohol poisoning and I could probably run my car off it!

for some god only known reason its the only spirit i can drink and keep down..
but the proof and vol on it ranges as it says on wikipedia.. i've got a bottle here that i bought in spain that is 140 proof and 70% alcohol.. i however prefer to drink it straight, to water it down and add sugar like they say on wikipedia kills you.. i had possibly a double asbiinthe like that a year or so ago and my god.. was out if it about 2 mins flat.. and no it didnt knock me out but i wasn't my normal coherent state.. since that time i've never watered it down and added sugar..
but after a lil bit of googling you can find some such as this
one that is 89.9% volume.. granted that is near enough pure alcohol and we all know that a single drop of pure alcohol would kill you.. i see 89.9% as a bit of a challenge...
for those of you that had never had it, dont go out and just buy some and drink it you will hurt yourself. please see

as it says on drink aware the ABV of a dark spirit is 40% so to steam ahead and have something that is double that isnt for everybody.
remember to drink responsibly and in moderation.

Good old absinthe... i to can only drink this spirit straight and keep it down.
