First of all, this is just out of pure curiosity, I wouldn't do it my self.

Anyhow, to the topic. This thing with the K750, that changing firmware basically turns it into a W800, is quite interesting. Sure, the W800 seems to have been somewhat of a quick job, but more happiness to the users.
Since then, the series seem to have started its own branch of phones where not many are as like a normal phone as the W800/K750. (Correct me if I'm wrong, I've never been watching the series very closely...)

Once again, though, there are two very similar phones out, one 'normal' (M600) and one in the series (W950). This rises the question: Would it be technically possible to do the 'K750 trick' on a M600, turning it into a W950? The technical problem I can see is the keyboard thats missing on the W950 (and probably therefore also the settings and support for it in its firmware), but I think UIQ can handle that quite well anyway, since the keyboard on my P990 still works if you disable it in the settings (Under 'Handwriting' in the 'Text input' settings). The only thing that happens is that predictive text doesn't work for keyboard input anymore...

What do you people think?

(Note that I don't own an M600, neither a W950, so I don't know too much about those phones (and some of my thought may be wrong because of that). I've only played a little with an M600, but only 'on the surface', and I've never seen a W950 in real life.)

interesting theory ...

but - i can't get your point. the firmware is written for the particular phone with its (sometimes) unique features (like the keyboard on m600). why should those be deactivated in exchange for some other things which maybe even won't work on the false device. i wouldn't see the benefit.

but software addons on basis of uiq could bring a lot more benefits - if they're made universal.

exactly. the firmware is written for the individual device. i'm pretty sure the cpu etc. is different in the p990 and the m600/w950. the w950 also has a 4gig hdd whereas the m600 doesn't, and the m600 has a qwerty keyboard, whereas the w950 has a phone keypad (you know what i mean!)

there is also the little complication of wifi. basically - what's the point.

Well, my main idea was if a M600 could be made into a W950, not fiddling with the P990 or the other way round, so simply I removed the part about P990 in the post, the end of it apparently caused confusion...

(For the interested, here it is:
"Another question that rises is if the more radical thing to do, changing the P990 into a M600/W950 (of course at the cost of the camera and WiFi), would be possible... Only reason to do that would be the more usable home screen, I think.")

And to answer the question 'Why?': For fun, of course! Why do you think someone fixed a way to convert K750s to W800s?
