I found that my V600i had died recently (

When I took it to a Vodafone shop, I was told to use
Update Service.
I have
never updated a phone before and I don't know where to start.
1. When I try to update it would I have to keep it plugged in into the mains as well as the charge port is seperate to the USB connector?
2. If the update goes wrong, can it be fixed?
3. Does the update start even if the phone is off, as it doesn't turn on?
4. How long would it take (approx.)?
