> 3G, does it have a future?
Bookmark topic
Hi everyone,
as members of Esato, I would like to hear your opinion on the upcoming 3G mobile phones.
The last news is that Tele2 doesn't want the 3G license anymore...
Do you think 3G is going to have a future?
Which are the applications you think will make 3G a success, if any?
I personally think that 3G will have success only if the mobile companies understand that it is all about content... I don't know which applications will be the "killer ones". I thought about it a lot of times but couldn't really figure out something that I would really like to have and isn't possible to have with the actual 2.5G (GPRS) phones.
My thought is also that the licenses had a too high cost and this will prevent companies for investing in 3G.
An interesting idea would be not to consider 3G only as a mobile phone technology. The bandwidth is high enough for it to be used for other devices, such as cars and other.
But all in all I am still not sure whether or not 3G will be a hit...
I would appreciate some inputs from you.

The thing that I'm mostly expecting from it, is the broadband speed in
downloads. If the consumers would think of the possibilities of a laptop
hooked up to 3G, it would be a success.
A very low percent of the population in Sweden has access to
broadband, with 3G "all" could have it. As the Gov here has decided,
"everybody" is entitled to broadband, well that costs a lot, but 3G
would be a much cheaper alternative...
I really do hope it'll be a big hit.

Yeah, me too. Streaming media OTA is kinda fun and usefull i think... It works now with 2.5G, but with 3G the speed, quality and the available media would probably improve a lot, and of course surfing the real net through your phone or phone+pda would be a joy! =) i just hope operators won't fu@k it up, over-charging!

There's no question that 3G has a future. It will be slow to catch on just like 2.5G was (and still is). But it will succeed without doubt for one reason: It offers far more capacity for voice calls. Carriers will need that capacity. The initial killer (mainstream) apps which will set it apart from 2.5G will be...
-Porn
-Online gaming
-Corporate VPN access
...in that order. It will take a long time before mobile networks become suitable for general broadband access like DSL/cable because of capacity and cost issues. It will happen, but not with 3G.

Yeah, and what about file-sharing between our phones! Sharing music files, videos, games, software etc.... That would be pretty cool huh?!

First u have 2 think of geography and how consumers would want or use it. USA, has so many 802.11b wireless access points, that VPN, gaming, file sharing, and even hosting is done on laptops and PocketPCs. With version a & g coming out 52-100MBps, 3g got an uphill battle. Marketing alone will sell the content, not vice versa. At least here. Wireless is still a service primarily! Content must be catered 2 culture in that country.

Porn as a killer app for 3G?
On a mobile phone? Why?
Next thing you know, people are going to start to jack off in toilet cubicles, etc.

neonismo, I'm not advocating porn in any way. But it consistently takes advantage of new forms of media. That's because there's a lot of money to be made.
Porn videos appeared in VHS/BETA format almost as soon as it existed and more money is generated through porn video sales than "legitimate" films. The same holds true for pay-per-view cable channels. The true explosion occured with the onset of the Internet. It is the most wide-spread subject matter for web-sites throughout the world.
Porn already accounts for a large portion of 2G WAP sites despite the media's inherent limitations. 3G mobile services will be accompanied by handsets with larger, more colorful screens and bandwidth capable of supporting streaming video. It isn't difficult to see what the number one killer-app will be. As for what people do with it, well, let's not discuss that.
