> K790 - unknown status bar icon - Please help

Last day i got an alert on my phone saying new fax received and also a previously unknown icon on the status bar which i assume stands for Fax message received.
i have attached an image of how the new icon looks like.
I never knew we could sent or receive fax from K800i.
I opened the message from the alert and saw a url in it. then i closed it.
but the new icon in status bar refuses to go away. i tried locating the fax message i had opened from the alert but couldn't find it anywhere in the phone.
where did the fax message go to?
why dosent the new fax icon go away?
Any suggestions are welcome as i would like to get rid of that icon.
Switching off and removing battery dint help as the new icon reappeared within 30 sec after restarting. I searched in messages and email sections for the fax message i had initially viewed. but it was nowhere to be found.

Sounds like it could be a wap push message, could be a spam one. I'd just delete this link, it's probably a link to something dodgy!

Its not a push message, that is an envelope with an @ sign in the top right hand corner

so its some sort of email i guess

@dile - If the UNKNOWN still won't DISAPPEAR for the coming DAYS . . . try accessing the WEB (GPRS) let's SEE from there what happens . . . maybe it needs to be connected to the NET in order to retrieve that UNKNOWN message/folder/envelope etc . . . .

What you are seeing is a special type of notification that is controlled by your SIM card, and send "usually" by your service provider.
Let me explain first about these notifications first, as this is a system that is not used by many providers (those on T-Mobile, and Orange in the UK will probably know what I am talking about). Most providers, when you recieve a voicemail (for example) just send a text message to your phone saying you have received a voicemail, and that its ready for you to pick up. However, the GSM system allows a different notification system, which is for some reason not used by many providers. Instead of sending a normal text to the subscriber, a special type of text message is send called a Voicemail Notification. This will cause the phone to bleep as normal, however, instead of displaying a "text" message, it says "New Voicemail", and a different icon appears which is like an envelope with a tape recorder. this will remain on the screen usually for a few days, or until you pick up the voice mail. You cannot remove the icon yourself. The notification is "stored" on the SIM card, and if you put your SIM into another phone, the notification will appear on the new phone. (see the voicemail icon on page for of the K800i manual)
When you call your voicemail, either your SIM card detects that you are dialing your voicemail number and turns off the notification (which is what T-Mobile/One2One did), or your provider sends another special text message message to the phone to turn off the icon (which is the way Orange does it).
As I said, not all providers do it this way, and if you are confused, your provider does not use this mechanism.
Like wise, there is also provision for a Fax Mailbox, like voicemail (Orange does this, and so does T-Mobile on a business tarrif). You are given a seperate number as a FAX number. When someone tries to fax you, instead of sending the call to your phone, the provider handles the fax, and then stores it in a speical fax mailbox on their servers. A special mesage is sent to you which turns on the Fax Notification that you see. When you retrieve th fax, either using your phone, or the internet, another message is sent to turn off the fax notification.
There is a third rarely used notification for email, where again, when you recieve an email at your provider, it will send an email notification. This is nothign to do with the built in email client on your phone, and works even with older phones that do not have email clients. this uses an envelope with an @ sign, and is identical to the new email icon provided by the built in email client (which is confusing!)
The point being, these notifications are actually switched on and off by sending special messages to your phone, or by the SIM card itself.
So unless you have a FAX Mailbox service as part of your contract, i strongly suspect either your provider screwed up by sending that notification to you by accident, or someone is pulling a prank on you, by sending the special message to turn on the fax notification to your fone.
I used to prank some people by doing this when i was at university, using a special software on my laptop, then sending the message through my connected Nokia. I would send voicemail, and sometimes faxmail notifications to their phones, and watch as they call their voice/fax mail service, then wonder why they dont have any messages. IF i was truely evil, i may even send an Email notification which would stay on their phone for ages as it cannot be easily removed, unless i send a second message to remove it.
AS for getting rid of it, unfortunately there is little you can do easily to remove it. Hopefully it shoudl expire after a while and dissapear, if not, you have to either:
- call your service provider, and tell them what has happend, and ask if they can send a message to turn it off.
- find a program on the net which you install onto a computer, then it uses your phone to send the special text messages to turn off the icon.
Unfortunatly i cannot remember the name of the program, as it was over 6 years since i used it.
Hope i have at least provided some information as to what is happening.
