UIQ Open continues
UIQ Open is the application competition where developers can submit their most creative UIQ 3 application(s) and a panel of judges picks two winners in five categories to reward each with a UIQ phone, commercial packages and marketing. On top of that, the winners will have their application featured in the UIQ Demo Suite 2007. Participation in the UIQ Open is free of charge. Applications can be submitted until February 18, 2007. All types of submissions are welcome: amateur personal demos, open source projects, commercial applications - all are entitled to win as the Developer Program will award entries that best show off the UIQ platform. To enter or to read more about the competition, please go to the UIQ Developer Portal.

This is too little too late, realising that nobody is keen to develop stuff for it's dying platform they have decided to create a "competition" where you can win a phone and some free marketing... Should all developers be welcomed with open arms and given these things for free anyway? Lame.

I think anything that encourages UIQ should be applauded.

Despite P990i issues i still think UIQ is the best operating system out there. I find it gives me:
1,Best message writing and execution.
2,Great touchscreen interface.
3, Love the look and logic of it.

It's much better than WM5 and even series 60 has been full of bugs lately.

LONG LIVE UIQ!

You are entitled to your view... a bit "rose tinted" though.

And as I mentioned, it is a LOT lame if they can't just give developers these things for free anyway. Instead they chose to charge developers to sign applications. It's like pouring water into a bucket with a hole at the bottom of it.

I am not discussing the merits of the handset... I wouldn't still be here if I wasn't impressed by the basic features. But we didn't pay all that dough for a basic phone did we?

Well,it's only been one year when they first released their first uiq3 phone, the m600.
I guess we could still give them some time.
New softwares are getting released every week right now, that's quite okay.

The M600 was released on July, so, its not one year since

I think UIQ 3 is a valid platform, and this year will be decisive fot that, with the launch of new devices, and the consolidations of SE has owner of UIQ

True... But we didn't pay all that money for p990 just to used as crash test dummies? You can settle for the "new" generation of phones... But what's wrong with a public apology and making the existing range useful? And what is the big deal with wanting SE to give some REAL support to developers to encourage software development?

Instead they choose to make it look like it's an honour to win free software signing and a device to test it on.

Hi all,
I actually don't think SE had a choice about buying UIQ as they are the only users of it. I think it was more a case of buy it or lose it as it was doing Symbian's reputation no good at all. The next generation of UIQ devices will need to be far better on release than the current devices where or it really is going to die. So many people have now turned there back on SE and are very unlikely to return and lets face it UIQ's share of Symbian smart phones is tiny. Admittedly things have got better since the latest firmware revisions in January but this is how these devices should of shipped in the first place not some 6 months after IMHO. It really is going to take something truly exceptional for me to return to SE and i am not alone in this view either.

@Dogmann

Agreed... I see you changed your avatar back to T68.

Out of protest?

Cos that's the reason I did it...

Motorola and Benq are two more vendors offering UIQ phones. And then we have this odd bird.

I have been watching the number of titles Handango is offering to the P990. When I bought my P990i in the first week of November, the site listed about 560 titles, IRC. Today it is up at 731.

How are people supposed to develop software when the platform won't stay up more than a few hours:)
