A friend bought a T-mobile Vario 2 online. The main reason for it is to access the net while at home. When you order it gets you to check your coverage online. At his house it said the 3G reception was excellent. When the phone turned he only got gprs. When he called them they told him he is actually in a poor reception area and there is no 3g near him.
What is the point in getting you to check before you buy if the map is wrong?

similar story with vodafone.

When I first got the V800 on the day it launched they said 3g was great coverage at my place but I rarely saw 3g. Even middle of last year when I got a PCMCIA data card from vodafone it was the same story and no better reception that 18 months earlier

perhaps its the same story with all the companies, they exagerate their converage to make it look better, or simply, their computer models are not very accurate and they don't check the areas manually

Same story with orange too, and probably everyone else too.

Not sure how they knew he was in a bad area if the website said it was good. thats just plain wrong. o2 customers have access to the same coverage maps as we do. not that that always makes them right.

part of the problem is the models cant always take into account all geographical features. for example my home coverage shows as good on the map but cus the house is in a dip in the land it isnt as good as the map shows.

I think these maps are usually computer generated and predicted, so tend not to be 100% accurate. I was often told where I used to live that I was in an excellent service area but I often struggled to get a decent signal, this was both Orange and O2.

I once had a vodafone rep tell me that about 5 miles south of me there was great 3g coverage as all 3g coverage on their map was in blue. I had to point out to him that the blue area to the south of me as the english channel! O2 maps actually say I live in a bad area but I have perfect reception.

Hi all,
Well i can't talk for all Mobile Networks but with T-Mobile if you go through to Data support if you are having a problem they can check the output of the nearest cells to you and if there is a problem with a cell site get it fixed. I live in Stanmore NW London and all have full UMTS signal all the time where ever i go as that is what my phone is configured for and only UMTS. Suppose no Network is perfect but I'm more than happy with mine.

where I live in northern ireland, signal is totally fine, but if you ever experience loss of signal and call them up I get the poor excuse that coverage in all of NI is very poor, its not their fault im told
