To have to use WMP and add art track by track or to even resort to using itunes shows that the w850i uses a broken and inconvenient system for adding album art.
I have a media server at home. I have hundreds of albums on that. Each of those album folders have a folder.jpg with the relevant album art. All I want to do is to copy the folder from the server and paste into my phone memory card. I then expect the W850i walkman software to display the art correctly. Except it doesnt.
WHY OH WHY does it not work this way? I mean WMP has no problem displaying folder.jpg, nor does any other software..

Works on w950 everytime. Just copy folder over using explorer including folder.jpg. Dont see why it wouldn't work on w850. I think only issue could be that jpg should not be larger than 200*200.

Well I cannot see how you have managed to put the album art in the same folder as the mp3s and have it display on your w850i. I and many others have tried this countless times and it simply does not work. And yes, I do name it folder.jpg.

Okay - give me a URL for a specifc album pic that works via play.com. I have my 4gb memory stick on me now, i'll transfer that and see whether it displays on my w850

If I wanted to use itunes, I would have bought an ipod.
This method is stupid and unacceptable (dont get me wrong, thanks for sharing it and it isnt your fault) - when are Sony Ericsson going to learn?

It doesn't really matter what the file is called so long as it is a jpeg, also you need to update the music on the phone after transferring the file for the phone to find it (this works on the w950 not sure about the w850)

Another thing windows tends to hie the jpg files within the folders, this can be avoided by setting the folder to view hidden files/folders and then selecting the .jpg file right clicking go to properties and untick the hidden box!

Hope this helps!!
