The Iventor of the camera phone Philippe Kahn's story of the origin of the phone-cam started when his wife, Sonia Lee, roared at him while spending 18 hours in labor.

ESATO NEWS

As his wife's labor went on, Kahn started fiddling with his hardware and writing code to glue it together. "I had time to make a couple trips to RadioShack to get soldering wire," Philippe Kahn says. "I just stayed in the room and made that thing work."

By the time he was holding his newborn daughter, Kahn could use his jury-rigged contraption to take a digital photo and wirelessly post it for his friends and family.

Motorola was in the process of buying Starfish, and Kahn says he first showed his invention to his new boss. But Motorola was just getting a new CEO (Chris Galvin) and embarking on one of the most ill-fated projects in global corporate history (the Iridium satellite phone system). Motorola passed on the cell phone camera.

Kahn formed a new company, LightSurf, to build and market PictureMail - a back-end system that would let a camera phone take a photo and send it somewhere. The first version came out in Japan in 1999, helping spur the Japanese to make the earliest cell-cams. Motorola and Nokia ended up being late to the Camera phone game."

You truly are the Lt.Cdr. Data of this forum - an unending source of, err, something... Sauce? I don't care - thanks for the absence of the photos, I guess! just kidding! The miracle of birth (and managing to squeeze a soldering iron in the same paragraph!!!)...
Have a great w/end!

This heartwarming story of how Philippe Kahn invented the camera phone in a hospital room while his wife was having a baby is being put under the microscope by C/Net's editor, Michael Kanellos, who claims it's not quite accurate, and that Kahn was "not the first person to cross-breed the digital camera and the mobile phone".

"This part is true, Kahn's wife did have a baby in January 1997 and Kahn did rig up all that stuff and post pictures to a Web site. The experiment eventually led to LightSurf, which he sold for $270 million to VeriSign in 2005.

But earlier, in 1994, Olympus released a camera called the Deltis VC-1100, which contained built-in functionality that let users upload digital photos over cellular and analog phone lines. More Here

Kahn also thinks the evolution of the camera phone has only just begun.

His nwest startup, Fullpower Technologies Inc., which is in stealth mode working on the "convergence of life sciences and wireless," according to its Web site. www.fullpower.com

But, Kahn said, it will, among other things, "help make camera phones better."
