Does anybody here used this as modem connectiing via pc? whats abt its EDGE performance? is it perform like Nokia set? in specs sheet EDGE class 10 means capable of 236kbps. does this speed can be achieved by this set? it is the determinig factor to buy this for me as i am now using k750i and now upgrade to this set cause i have unlimited EDGE package deal with my operator so i want the maximum bandwith. pls help me out pls to decide. otherwise i have to went for nokia which i dont want to. so can any body suggest to help?

Depends on your operator mostly,I never tried to measure speed with it,but its very much quicker than gprs (abt 3x in my place)..

It depends on the operator as well. I can watch tv for example with w810 without any problem, almost the same quality as with a umts fone.

I'm using my nokia 6630 as edge modem. In my area I got maximum speed 17Kbps on particular webpage and download site. And average 9Kbps. Its speed depends on your uses base station. On the busy time (like when maximum people talk) speed dramatically decreased.
And with my p990i and K800i I got maximum 5.5Kbps.
Anyway I’m from Bangladesh and using GrameenPhone. One of my friend from other area where user (not only edge; all network user) are little bit low said, he gets maximum 35Kbps. So it does totally depend on your service provider.

The 236kBit/s is in theory. You always have protocol overhead (about 15%) and data loss due to the wireless nature of these connections. In practice I never managed to get more than a steady 180 kBit/s with EDGE. I did some comparisons for Swisscom about a year ago and the best performance indeed was with the SE handset. But only by a 5% margin over the Nokia.
By the way: the moment you are more than a few 100 meters away from a base station performance will degrade. At about 3km distance the speed will not be considerably hight than with GPRS.
And it is heavily depending on the network quality of your operator. In fact that is the most critical aspect.

You obviously have not much of a idea how Edge works. You clearly confuse it with 3G ! I am at exactly 4,7 km from nearest tower and regularely get 25kbyte a sec download (and about 7upload) on 3g I get exactly 0kbyte up or down (no network) The best way to imagine Edge (if you are not a technician/ingeneer) is GPRS on steroides where as 3G is a all together different technology - created by ingeniers on politician's directions :grin: 3,5G alleviates some of the constrains 3G has, but is still a somewhat 'handicapped' technology :( 4G/wimax is the best we can hope for for the near future. Today most old gsm base stations are 'upgraded' to Edge. Unfortunately SE is pathetic when it comes to EDGE support. 3G will disappear as quickly as it come. (will change to 3.5G) Edge on the other hand will stay with us a bit longer (4g/wimax) will eventually replace it in years to come. Unfortunately in Europe quite a nr. of people still use the by now obsolete Gprs.

If you have 25kb/s that is 200kBit/s. Of course that depends how you measure it: is that the net datarate or is the overhead included? If this is measured on the IP stack level (like most tools do) it is including the overhead, so the net datarate might very well be around 180kBit/s
But as I already stated: the performance is mostly depending on the operator network. And my conclusion in that respect for Swisscom was not that good. Anyway: in Switzerland it is hard to get 4 km away without a hill or mountain in between you and the next base station
