I live in India and I find that my P990i does not surf as fast as my Nokia 6230i or O2 Atom. A friend tells me that this is because the P990i does not have something called EDGE but has plain GPRS. Now these acronyms confuse me so I want to know if it is possible for me to get EDGE software/firmware on my P990i or is it a function on the hardware?

A related question, why would Sony not equip a modern phone as the P990i with EDGE when my old Nokia 6230i had it.

Also does the P990i have 3G? 3G is still not available in India but if it does become available can I use it on my P990i? If not is there a phone that has EDGE, 3G, a touch screen and a tactile numeric kappad?

It has 3G, but I don't think it has EDGE.

@ navinadv,

The main reason for buying P990i, for many people at least, is 3G! It's even more important to me than Wifi, as I have an unlimited plan.

But seriously, you bought a P990i without knowing what kind of network support it has? Not even knowing if it has 3G????

P990i has every possible connection except EDGE. 3G is twice faster than EDGE while Wi-fi is even faster than 3G (which is probably why SE assumed EDGE wouldn't be much of a selling point). Satisfying everyone is a b*#@h ain't it

but even the 3G support in the P990 isn't the best as it doesn't support HSDPA which increases 3G speed by around 6-8 times that of normal 3G!

Nooooooooooo! Whyyyyyyyy? Is it true? No hsdpa support on the P990?

P990 is smick, but it's a bit of a dinosaur. Think how long it took to come out, hsdpa wasn't really on the radar when development was being completed on P990. If they don't replace P990 soon, they may bring out a revision of the radio hardware.

but thats what this thread is about. the original poster lives in an area that has EDGE but not 3G so in his case your statement is false

@max_wedge, but thats really the point. If you take a year to bring a product to market instead of 3 months, then you really need to review the specifications and bring them up to date

in this case, hsdpa is purely a radio issue and would not affect application developers at all

but perhaps they did consider it but decided procesor speed or battery life were insufficient to handle the extra bandwidth

to answer the original question, there is, of course, no way to get EDGE into a P990
