there is definitly no legislation to stop you changing CDA however there is legislation to stop you changing the IMEI

here is what davinci say about it, for example

Can I change the CDA in the phone?

Simple answer YES

In order to use SEUS (SonyEricsson-Update-Service) you need to have a valid CDA number. Some CDA numbers (like from Vodafone) are banned from SEUS. The older phones, a CDA change was enough to bypass this, but in some newer phones, such as K750i they ban a combination from CDA / IMEI (serial) number. A K750i produced for HongKong market CANNOT work on SEUS with a CDA from a EURO country. Inorder to make this work you would need to change CDA + IMEI. IMEI changing is illegal, and Davinciteam does not support it!

The current applicable law on what can and can't be done, is the mobile phone reprogramming act, which only states that it is illegal to:

- Posess the tools to change the IMEI, AND intend to use them
- Sell the any tools which can be used to change the IMEI, AND believe that the person wwhom you sell to will use them for that purpose
- To change the IMEI of any mobile phone

It is perfectly legal to change the CDA, the counterargument is.....

Is it legal to brand phones, remove content/functions, and restrict the usage of the phone, from how it was intended and first made??

I believe the answer to this is yes, and if seriously challenged by consumers the service provides would have to stop this practice, the same way they were FORCED to offer unlocking.

I think they would lose this battle under UK consumer rights act.

I have a P910i that went faulty, the system board had to be replaced, I acheived this by buying a faulty phone and swapped the the board.

The new board I got is branded to vodafone UK which I find horrible, my old phone was totally unbranded, I am planning to get the phone flashed tomorrow to remove the branding, is there any reason why I cannot use the IMEI and CMA numbers from my faulty motherboard, surely this will never be detected and should restore my phone to the original setup even though I have replaced the system board..........
