A patent filed in 2004 and issued to Sony Ericsson on 1st August 2006 appears to discuss, in some detail, how a mobile phone could alter the screen from portrait to landscape depending on the handset orientation.

The screen on the iPhone was one of the most exciting features. To see it automatically rotate as you changed the handsets angle was magical, now it seems Sony Ericsson had the idea years ago.
The patent appears to be discussing the method by which an images could be dynamically resized and rotated rather than the technology behind the orientation sensors. The key statement is in the diagram below.
"A single display can be used, for example in portrait mode while terminal functions are being used and in landscape mode while imaging functions are being used. The change between the two orientations can be accomplished automatically. In some embodiments, the capability is also provided to process an image for assignment to a terminal function, where the image has at least one display attribute that makes it at least partly unsuitable for use with the terminal function. The processing may include resizing, cropping, and/or rotating the image. This processing can be accomplished for example, so that a landscape image can be viewed conveniently in a portrait orientation."

many brands use things that SE has a patent over, why doesn't SE do anything about it?

They do from time to time.
BTW Apple have a history of using other peoples stuff. The Beatles owned the rights to the use of the Apple name. Apple computers came to an agreement with them so long as there was no music industry connection in thier use. Then along came the iPod...

thats ericsson, not SE
if SE would go for a full attack on the companies that make phones with thier patents, forcing them to stop making those phones and pay up, then SE could stop other companies gaining marketshare

Yes, but in enforcing it's patents Ericsson is also benefiting
by making it's products more competitive.
And as a parent company this also benfits Ericsson.

Apple´s great idea was to make the vertical/horizontal switch by using sensors, which makes the transition not only automatic but very easy, intuitive and 'pretty' on the eyes. Having the screen´s orientation changed according to displayed function (image, menu and etc) is a good idea but other tech companies have products that already do this like mobiles by nokia, a certain windows mobile pda or more ( i dont remember which and etc) and of course
mobiles ( i believe the camera´s horizontal orientation is already a use of that). So, I dont think
could sue Apple because not only thats already a widespreed idea but also its the way apple implemented it that makes iphone special and not the idea itself (common already).
